Hi All,
Just bought the wife an S80 1.6 diesel auto for her commute down the M27 everyday.
It had 23K on the clock with a service book stamped but no receipts. I have had the cam belt and bits changed owing to it's age not the miles.
It is a lovely car to drive, just drove up to Gatwick and back form Southampton, and it shows over 240 miles for the trip, and 860 miles left in the tank. This looks like mega mileage for a super smooth car (70 litre tank)
Any one any idea if one can get over a 1000 miles out of the tank? and what would be realistic? I would be happy with over 700.
Please advise on tips i should need to know of to keep this car going for a while as we tend to keep them longer term. So far enjoying the car as super comfort, and smooth ride

I too would be very surprised if you can get 1000 miles out of a tank. I have a late model V50 1.6D Manual, around 55-57mpg average is the norm, on a 55litre tank, the most I have got is around 580 miles.
I have owned the car since new, and on the whole its been pretty faultless, I was a highish mileage driver, this has plumpted since the pandemic, but its currently showing 235K miles - only engine issues have been a DPF filter (at 194K) and a spilt in an air hose about 3K miles ago. I would not expect your DPF filter to last that long, as 23K in 7 years suggests short journeys which is not good for a DPF filter longevity.
Other stuff has also been minor, what you would expect with a car with that sort of mileage (split gaiters, some suspension bushes, a couple of shock absorbers). Incidently I'm still on the original clutch and exhaust!
So if you regularly maintain it, I would expect very few mechanical issues. The bodywork (and interior) has also stood up well, though the drivers seat gives away the mileage!

1000 miles from a 70 litre tank would mean you'd need to average in excess of 65mpg and that's probably hugely optimistic in the real world. There was a time when the die hard, rose tinted old 163bhp D5 fanboys used to claim such mileage but it's all hopes and dreams. Their claims were usually substantiated by a grainy picture of the trip computer showing an an average of 87mpg or something equally farcical... probably taken after being reset and freewheeling down a hill for a mile. Said trip computers are known for also being optimistic.
