Appreciate these are very new but does anyone have any experience of them.

Thinking of changing from X3 m40i and the 40 plus mile electric only range sounds appealing.

Bought an XC60 in January (out of stock) but this is the one with more like 25 miles and 400hp all in. Expect you’re looking for the one after that, as you say, is more like 40-50 miles and 450hp. I knew this at the time but just didn’t want to wait any longer.

If still relevant, happy to provide experiences so far (like the fact that 25 miles is more like 10 miles unless you turn the climate control off, but expect you’re aware of this)

Here it is.

Minimal poster here but saw this topic. Never had these on my radar until a month ago when looking for a new co car. I was going for a Lexus NX Hybrid which is a very good car but the cost was high in terms of lease as it is a company car. Given the astronomical rises in lease costs and lead times my pool of options was very small. Full electric isn't really for me at the min and working for an oil company I think I'd get no end of abuse for abandoning fossil fuel completely. I currently drive a 330e and wanted something similar (if not a bit cheaper on tax) but more space. Great car but not ideally suited to carrying much. They now do an estate so I got a quote on that and this is from a dealer we had 4 cars off last year. it wasn't far off £600 before VAT so didn't really strike me as a bargain. I got quotes on a XC60 T6 and T8 recharge from the local dealer and both came in under £500 with only £25 between them which considering the performance and the fact the T8 was Ultimate spec and the T6 Plus spec it seems a no brainer. 65k list car which costs about as much to lease as a normal 330e and will cost me roughly the same in tax. In terms of range I always think that if you take off a 3rd of the stated range you won't be too far off and that's been the case for my 330e which tends to do low (very) 20's. The new Volvo is stated to do 47 miles if it does 30 I'll be happy and it will do most of my normal driving. Your car looks great by the way and I like the colour though have gone for Thunder Grey myself. If you can give me any more detail on how you find the car that would be great.

The most useful info I can probably give, is what caught me by surprise. Main points:

- As above, real range is less than indicated range although I've now discovered that it's the climate control (with a/c defaulting to on) that does this. Switch it off and the real range pretty much matches indicated range unless you're on the motorway. If you leave the climate on then, as you say, you're losing about 1/3 miles.
- The car is VERY heavy on petrol. Once the electric has gone, it's about 18mpg. I was assuming I'd get more like 25-30mpg. FWIW, the average I've achieved so far is about 32 mpg, but I haven't done many long journeys yet.
- Google set up is quite slick but apps and other related features more limited. For example, I assumed it would have a browser to research stuff on a trip but it doesn't. Also, no way to get the car to start charging in middle of night although upgrade apparently coming.
- My car has Pilot. Wasn't something I'd have chosen but came out of stock. At first I thought the self-steer was a gimmick, but combined with radar cruise it does work well.

The first 3 points are the only real negatives. Really well screwed together, I like the simple interior and overall looks, feels rapid, seats great, lights great , HUD works well, etc. Plus if you're getting the newer one then I think the higher electric motor output and range will make quite a difference. Also, handling and ride was better than i was expecting

I see you're coming from a BMW and I did look at the X5 e. Liked the idea of a 6 cylinder engine, it has the 50 mile range and I think the infotainment would be better. But just not keen on the less than subtle looks of recent BMW stuff..

Hmm,

interesting points thanks for your responses.

the x3 is the wife's car and it's only been used for mainly short journey's in the last three years - averaged about 21-22 mpg in circa 13.5k - the longest journey it might do on average is a run down the motorway circa 50 miles so this Volvo might be the ticket.

- does the Volvo steam up if you turn of the A/C though like some other cars do?
- is the MPG really that bad when you run out of battery say on the motorway but drive like a granny? - X3 M40i will do circa 30mpg on the motorway if driven gently
- I notice that if you are going to lease there are various T8's available in 8-10 weeks but no T6's at all - is this UK stock also available on a PCP basis to UK dealers does anyone know?
- also not sure I would want 22inch wheels (the 21's on the X3 are bad enough!) - are the 20's okay?

Coast to coast are quoting about 10% off rrp - is that fair?

cheers

oh nice blue - which one is that?

Test drove the X5 45e and was very impressed - shame they reduced the power of the ICE - but not an option for use as the wife thinks it's too big.

No, noticed that.

It’s got me thinking. I only recently noticed that I’d had air con on and saw the difference in electric consumption when I turned it off ie range nearly doubled. Not tried this on the ICE yet. Will give it a go and see what difference I get. May not be until weekend.

I used Volvo UK car locator and they definitely had T6 at the time (in Dec / Jan). Could you look at that and get a PCP through them.

- also not sure I would want 22inch wheels (the 21's on the X3 are bad enough!) - are the 20's okay? Think mine are 21 and they feel fine to me.

Yes, through Volvo I got about 5%. Note that I got more off on collection (£1k) due to misbuild something that os quite common now and you need to look out for it. In my case it was a plastic dashboard when it was supposed to be leather. Soon got over it but was a bit annoyed on delivery day!

cheers

Thanks for the follow up info. Sounds like it is exactly as expected and a 2 litre turbo is never going to be that economical shifting a 2 tonne car shaped like a house. I can live with that based on the fact most normal stuff should be covered by electric and I'm used to charging mine daily now. In terms of car I'm doing a factory order and the dealer game me info for the 23 year model and I could get T6 or T8 but a sI said the minimal difference in cost for a much better car with another 100bhp seemed a no brainer. Stated economy doesn't seem much different so its not like the T6 does more to the gallon anyway. This car seems to be under the radar in terms of value on BIK as everyone is waxing lyrical abiout the Lexus (quite rightly it would seem) but this is just as cheap on co car tax with far more spec. Given the astronomical rise in lease costs it stands out as a bargain for me. We are alos getting a S60 T8 recharge for a salesman and that is under £400 a month ex VAT. We are expecting both cars in November so quite a way off.

Not a T6 but I’ve just ordered an XC60 with the B5 petrol (we have a small electric car for local journeys)

Managed to get 16% off list price but this is 0% apr hire purchase rather than lease and about a third of the discount was a ‘loyalty’ contribution from Volvo for having a V90.

So 10% feels about right.

Thought I'd chime in on the MPG. I have the XC90 T8 (2020) with 17k miles on it now. Depends on your driving style, but my longest journeys have been with the car loaded going on holiday, and I've never not achieved over 30mpg on runs. I drove across to West Wales and averaged 34mpg over 800 miles for the week. And that was with only a single charge when leaving home.

I'd expect your early MPG to improve.

Been getting more than 34mpg in my 4.4Sdv8 range so hardly moved the game on very far though has it?

I don't really think that's the point of the Recharge models. 34mpg is my worst case, if I have long journeys and then a period without access to a charger. Short journeys are always done charged, so it doesn't get any worse.

I will only fill up about every 1000 miles. Tank is 70 litres, so even if I ran it dry on average it's achieving 64mpg.

That's clearly skewed because I charge a lot as well. Up to the point where prices began going crazy for both fuel and electricity, it was costing approximately 4 times less per mile on electricity than petrol based on that 34mpg. But it's skewing it again, because the electic miles are actually those sat in traffic, on short journeys or slow moving, where there's a greater difference in £ per mile.

It's by no means perfect, but you buy the car that suits your needs. If you only do long journeys then of course the diesel variant is probably the one to go for.

A very well written and argued post! Absolutely I think the key is in buying what you use, so short journeys in towns/cities electric/hybrid is the way to go and it’s great that these vehicles exist, just feel that all ICE vehicles are getting shunned when actually a diesel for 20k a year useage will probably be far better for the environment.

Only managed 10% discount on my and that was with walking into dealer with a carwow quote, otherwise they were giving me 3%, obviously I must look a bit of a mug biggrin

Can't really add too much as I've not got mine yet but the 455 looses the supercharger due to better electric motors on the rear and starter, this should make it more economical than the old 400. I don't expect it to be great but my use case is very much city based with engine for towing and reckon I'll mostly use it as an EV, current diesel tank does 21-23mpg in these scenarios, quite happy if it does the same, if it does more great.

With respect to mileage on electric it is going to depend on how it is used but most reviewers are doing 35 miles on the 455, but then if you check out the ecodriver youtube he actually manages 35 on the old 400s small battery drivetrain, its an interesting youtube to watch, he has an xc90 T8 400 and has tests starting with an empty battery and using eco skills still manages 48mpg over his test route, so like every car what you'll get depends on how you drive.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ecodr...

I test drove a T8 with 22s and I found the ride great but it very much depends on your frame of reference I guess, the T8 has the air suspension I'd imagine without it the ride would be worse, regarding my T8 drive I knew very little about the car at the time I only ran in Hybrid mode, it might have worse ride quality in Pure as it lowers the car for aerodynamics. Probably more sensible to stick with 20s, saves a load of dough, cheaper tyres etc, but I like the additional arch extensions that come with the 22s, even if they are miniscule, I know I'm sad biggrin

Strange, the older drivetrain uses and auxiliary fuel driven heater so climate shouldn't effect range so badly, do you have it enabled in the settings? the 455 has moved to electric climate so will certainly use more electric.

Have you tried pre-heating the car in the mornings before setting off whilst it is charging?

We have a B5 XC60 bought May last year, the overall mpg is sitting at 36mpg, and the highest I've achieved is 41mpg on a run from Cheshire to Sussex and back. If I only got 18mpg I'd be very disappointed (most of our mileage is relatively short urban trips as well)

For current times thats a good deal, we bought last May when there was a weekend promotion, and dealers were struggling to shift cars because of Covid (and lockdowns), I too am a serial Volvo purchaser (so got the loyalty discount), but with some negotiation and buying a 'stock' new vehicle managed to get 25% off the sticker price.

In fact I think the sticker price for Volvo's is just the starting point as I've avaeraged 22% off the the last 3 that I've bought!

Good to hear - just got a 2017 T8 (which has slightly smaller battery than yours) and C40 for my wife to replace her freelander diesel and my jag ipace EV. The jag hasn’t gone yet so not driven the xc90 much yet but v pleased it has 20 inch wheels and air suspension- seems extremely comfy. Only managed about 14 miles electric drive at the weekend before
Battery was empty but that’s 14 miles more than the freelander managed

Thanks for sharing this (likewise to other posters on here).
So… I can’t now fathom how I got such poor mpg to begin with. Have now tried ICE only, having reset the trip meter, and got around 36 mpg on a mix of A roads down to country and local lanes. Car is currently sitting on 75mpg although I think 65mpg is probably more realistic for the sort of trips I do on average ie the battery probably covers about half of any trip. As per my earlier post, I think the A/C makes quite a difference but perhaps the engine has got a bit more efficient with 1k miles on it.

Also, finally got round to trying the Power mode this evening which was fun, if battery sapping.

I've just spent a week in the Trossachs, Scotland (I live in Surrey). Just over 1200 miles in total, with most of the local driving being up and down hill.

Fully charged when I left, with no other opportunity to charge, so the kw numbers beyond the battery's 11kw are recuperated from the slowing down. The car was loaded with 4 humans, a dog, and all the paraphanailia for winter Scottish munro bagging that that entails.

There was an awful lot of seat and steering wheel heating going on!

My wife is ex-Volvo Car UK employee so we get a different car every year (or so). I was driving a V60 B5 (soft hybrid I think they call that) but fleet have just delivered a new XC60 T8 Recharge and there's a lot of differences, especially in all the software and apps - something I don't usually pay a lot of attention to.

First stupid question: In the V60 I used to play music from a typical mini USB memory stick onto which I had stored loads of CDs. This new car only has 2 x micro USB ports so the memory stick doesn't fit. I can see on eBay that I can buy an adaptor but before I do that, has anyone tried this and if so does the entertainment system then recognise all the music on my memory stick and display it properly with all the track information etc.?

Also, I used the other mini USB port in the V60 to charge my phone, with a mini to micro USB cable, I guess I'll just buy a different cable to charge that (my phone doesn't have wireless charging).

p.s. 2nd daft question what are these sockets? Micro USB 2.0 or what? I just looked on eBay and the variety of different cables is baffling.hehe

They look like USB Type-C AND Yes you can get USB type-C memory sticks - also some i believe have a standard usb a port or adaptor.

Don't know if the car will accept a memory stick in there or if it's just for charging.

How is the Car - my wife thought the previous gen ( T8 with ~ 395 HP combined) felt a bit lethargic and not 'sporty' compared to Her X3 40i on a test drive - then again the salesman said the car had adaptive dampers but refused to adjust them and also the battery was flat on the drive.....

I am wondering if the new more powerful one is any different?

Can't really say yet, I've only driven it 10 miles and am still getting used to all the settings in the multi-level menus on the touchscreen display, which incidentally I generally hate, this one's no exception! I've turned off steering assist and put on 'creep mode' so it drives smoothly also turned off the head-up display - I'm not a fighter pilot hehe Now trying to figure out how to lower the suspension, maybe you can only do this in 'Powerful' mode, not sure?

Last night charged it to 100% to see how long it would take (about 6 hours) plugged into a 13a socket. I must say, not having a proper handbook makes it difficult to work out what is possible. Clicking around on the screen in the car (or on my PC) is not so good because it's difficult to know what to search for if you don't know what to ask! Finally, I don't drive the Volvo particularly fast so performance isn't a big thing, but based on my brief drive today I'm sure it's plenty quick enough for everyday use. smile Apparently 0-62 is done in 4.9 seconds.
