Hi,

So I have a 2010 S80 D5 and twice on my trip home I saw the coolant light come on after harsh braking at 30mph, it was just on briefly and after the brake was off again, please tell me this is normal and its just coolant sloshing around? After years of coolant issues with a dodgy BMW I thought I had escaped this problem lol.. Thanks in advance.

Have you actually checked the coolant level?

No, have you lifted the Bonnet and physically looked at the level?

Yes I have looked at the reservoir and it's full which is all the more confusing a braking action would affect its sensor unless its sensor is is quite high. Anyway light hasn't come on again.

So today after a short drive the light went on briefly when going around a roundabout and now the level is on minimum. Its possible last week I was on slightly unlevel ground on the driveway when I read full but in any case im sure I checked this on the level road too. Can I just add water for now to top it up and does anyone else here know how often the s8 needs topped up as I'm pretty sure it had coolant mentioned in the previous owners last service last year. Thank you all in advance.

Yes, but the correct coolant would be better, for the amount you are likely to put in it won't be a problem.

If the system is leak free basically it shouldn't need to be touched between services.

OK well I added some distilled water, however I am finding it storage the manual says to check it regularly. Even my old BMW with its pressurised system did not say that. There was no colour in the coolant, is there such a thing as clear coolant? I've never seen any. It was a bit murky in there too. I think kwikfit did coolant tests strips, maybe they can let me know it is just water.

You don't appear to be making the distinction between checking & topping up.

Of course you should check it regularly, otherwise you won't find out you have a minor issue until it becomes a major issue. That is not the same as topping it up regularly, I stand by my answer, it SHOULDN'T need topping up between services, if it does you have a minor issue that could develop further.

Clear coolant is called water, you need to get that sorted out.
