OK so I booked in for the oil change as the service light came on recently and to my surprise they charged £93 but the biggest issue is they won't turn off the service light. I'm quite surprised at this but anyway they said they would only do it it if it had a full service as per manufacturer recommended list. Now service checks are new to me given I have only bought second hand cars for a relatively low value which did not justify dealership service prices. I have however been quoted for preventative service work previously and I only expected to get an oil change so not entirely sure what to do. Not sure about the cars service history either as it didn't come with any, all I have know is that the water pump and cam belt has been done around the hundred thousand mark. Car is now about hundred fourty.

I don't see your problem, if you haven't got & don't want service history, why is there an issue?

Just ignore the light as you would ignore the service history.

YouTube is your friend here.

You can turn the service light off by pressing a set sequence of buttons in conjunction with ignition being switched on and off.
Can’t remember off the top of my head what the sequence is, but do it every year on my C30 after looking for the video.

Do the same to our V40 every year. Pretty simple to do once you have the right vid.

Thank you, I will have a search for it.

£93.00 for an oil change... seems about the norm based upon 6 litres of decent oil and a filter, that alone and you're looking at £60 for genuine bits via eBay but realistically if the garage has sourced, the prices may not be as discounted to you and then factor in labour and these days, even 30mins could easily be £50. So all in, for £93.00 then so be it. Only way to do it cheaper is to do it yourself or get a back street garage to do it and use the absolute cheapest crap oil you can source.

As for not resetting the service light, well yes... it's not had a service so understandably some garages would decline to do that. But with no history and you not being that bothered, why worry. Being honest, at 140k with no history on a D5, I'd be getting all the filters done more so the fuel filter as they're pretty critical when it comes to performance. I'm sure Volvo state every 40k but sod that, I do mine every 10k and afterwards there is a slight, but noticeable improvement. You don't need to use a main dealer to get a service done, any decent garage will gladly do it and give you a nice list of whatever else needs attention whilst they're at it.

Which you can choose to ignore, if you want...

I'd love to know why you guys think I am not bothered about having no service history, the car did not have it to provide and I bought this car at short notice and I was told a lot of cars don't have any because of the new GDPR rules, given its a car with a solid reputation for reliability, which has proven reliable at least to me in the almost three months I owned it, I bought it. I was actually after something sport from Japan like a Lexus IS 250 but couldn't get to see one with a decent price in my area.

Anyway, I am going to write to the original owner to query the service history, he's probably binned it but might have an idea. What kind of filters are you changing?

Contacting the previous owner is also a bit of a grey area with regards to GDPR, hence why the previous keepers name and address is no longer included on recent V5 documents. Not sure I'd want somebody contacting me to ask about my maintenance regime on a car I once owned. Plus, does it matter? If you don't know... assume it's not been done for a while and is due a major service. Being fair, replacing filters is no bad thing even if they have been done fairly recently though looking at them may hint at their age.
