S40 2.0.D to S80 1.6Drive
Discussion
Hi, ive been running around in my 2004 S40 2.0D now for nearly three years. Its been a good car very impressed with how well the bodyworks held up to rust its rusty undrrneath like most cars. Its just too small for my growing family. I like the look of the S80 and im thinking about the 1.6Drive for the cheap tax and decent mpg. I live in a city and rarely go over 40mph i would be doing mainly short journeys including a good run down the motor way at least once ever two weeks. Whats peoples opinions on them are they good for city driving . Not bothered about the size as i drive a lorry everday at work.
Have a 1.6 in a V60.
I’m looking for a new car.
Do I need to say any more?
I’m presuming you mean the 1560cc Diesel as the 1.6 petrol wasn’t used in the S80 I don’t think. For me, the engine is too small for the car, and the V60 is lighter and smaller than the S80 will be. It’s not great for long drives, wouldn’t want to go past 70 as it feels pained. Maybe that’s just my mechanical sympathy. Underpowered on hills too, and you have to adjust your driving style if you have passengers, or any luggage/ even a 2 week shop made a difference!
In Volvo terms, the engine is inherited form Ford, in turn from the Ford/PSA partnership, so same engine (albeit with some updates etc) going back to the Citroen c4 Mk1, Mk2 Focus etc.
One positive, I did a 250 mile trip on half a tank and about 60mpg, though never went over 70 (as mentioned) on the motorway. About half on motorway, rest on Welsh A&B roads.
Is probably not a bad engine in a hatchback, but with the added weight and size of a Volvo it doesn’t make the best sense.
Try a D3 or D4 S80, more powerful, probably suits the car more. But will be more efficient than a D5.

I test drove a 1.6 V70. It just felt a bit meh, it certainly didn't accelerate up the local hill. I would say it had similar feel to our 85bhp Ibiza - it works, works well, but you do find that it needs working hard regularly.
I bought a D3 V70 in the end. Much better torque, better suited to a heavy car. Also £30 tax and 50mpg+ on a run / 45mpg around town.
