Hi Guys,

Just bought this;

....a couple of hours ago. Cars drives brilliantly and I have no complaints. I was just at a friend's house 1 mile from home, and as we both said "seems like a good car" as it idled away on his driveway, there was a *pop* and diesel started gushing out. Got underneath and the fuel filter housing has split about 2 or 3 threads up, stranding the car.

Not a huge deal, I should have it fixed by tomorrow, but is it a concern in regards to excess fuel pressure or something? I've heard some people say they are a common water trap and can be weakened by frost, and we just had a very severe winter spell here in Ireland so it would make sense.

Thanks in advance.

I'd say likely to have been overtightened previously and potentially fractured the plastic housing and it's just coincidence that it failed. What's the filter like? Evidence that's it's been changed or is it the usual 75k service life that some think applies?

Thanks for the reply.

I done some Googling and it appears to be very common, especially as the plastic gets old and fatigued. I've now fixed the car and it's running great again. I did change the filter whilst I was there as the old one did seem in need of a change, although it wasn't awful. I would have liked to fit a brand new housing, but my local dealer wanted over 200 euro! So, I've fitted a second hand one for now and will treat the car to a new one for peace of mind in the future, providing it behaves itself of course.
