Volvo V40 which one?
Discussion
Hi All,
I'm considering a V40 as a daily driver. I'm an Alfa man but I've had Giuliettas for the last 9 years and want a change but the don't want a big saloon and don't want anything german, french or japanese, Volvo is the most appealing to me.
I'm looking at cars 2016-2018. Which petrol engines are the best? Is manual or auto best? What trim levels should I be looking at and what are the things to look out for?
Thanks in advance.

The petrols are all 2.0L 4 cylinders, except the autos which are destroked to 1.5L.
The T2 is a detuned T3 essentially.
In terms of trim levels, there are 4.
The base is Momentum and Inscription.
There's the sportier R Design and R Design Pro models also.
I would personally get an R design, ideally a pro as that gives you leather and 18inch alloys.
The standard R design comes with 17inch alloys and half leather interior.
Get a model with Sat Nav as that comes with the bigger 7inch screen.
Look out for models with the winter pack as that comes with heated seats and front screen.

Thanks for breaking that down for me. I’m going to be doing about 12-15,000 miles a year in it so I want the most comfortable best spec I can get. What are the dealers like? I’m more likely to go for an approved used. There’s about 5 dealers in about a 40 mile radius of where I live in Leicestershire. The T2 is a detuned T3 essentially.

I had a 2017 V40 T3 Inscription with Geartronic (so, the 1.5) and it was a lovely car to drive.
150hp doesn’t sound too impressive, but it accelerated briskly and never felt short of power. The inscription trim was quite nice although it was expensive for what it was.
Mine was new, so main dealer serviced which was pricey. Car was flawless. I’d recommend one.
Yes I’m particular interested in autos. I didn’t realise they’re all 1.5 and given I do a lot of longer journeys my concern is; would it feel underpowered and therefore not so economical?150hp doesn’t sound too impressive, but it accelerated briskly and never felt short of power. The momentum has cloth seats, so I'd avoid that. The other models are very comfortable so it's down to personal preference.
Look out for one with the adaptive cruise box ticked, it's very good although it's quite rare. Hardly any come with options.
The manual gearbox is very nice to use, it's the M66 gearbox in these. The autos are an Aisin Warner slushbox which is ok.
Like any brand, some dealers are really good and others are arrogant and not interested.
May not help but I have a 2014 V40 T3 1.6 R design which I'm really happy with, bought 4 years and 33k miles ago. It's fairly swift, more so once moving. It's surprised a couple of passengers before.
I did however have a later T3 as a courtesy car with the newer 2.0 engine still with 150bhp. It was so punchy, I couldn't believe it. I was disappointed getting back into my own car. Also it was the cross country so a lot higher riding but smoother than mine.

Yes - based on feedback and research It would be a 2.0 T3 I'd be after. There's a 17 plate with 46,000 miles close to the office where I work which I'm tempted to go and see.
