XC40 - any good?
Discussion
Thinking about chopping in my V60 D4 - which has served us well for 6 years/110k miles.
I'm fed up with the low profile tyres and harshish suspension on our crappy UK potholed roads so thinking an XC40 might give a more comfortable ride.
Any love on here for the XC40 model? Also any recommendations for a particular variant.
Main use will be short trips to the shops plus longer trips for holidays and visiting relatives etc.
Had Volvo for the last 20 years - V70, XC90, V60. Pretty much mapping the expansion and reduction of child moving requirements!

I had a test drive in a T4 last year, never driven any Volvo before and very limited experiance of autos which this was.
It was a very nice car, well built and felt nice inside, really wanted to like it but it was the most peculiar thing to drive.
In 40 years of driving I don't think I've ever driven anything that felt so remote from the road, It had driver modes so maybe it needed setting up or maybe there was something wrong with it?
It might just be me so don't take too much notice of my very limited experiance.

I'm guessing you've got a previous generation V60. Is it standard or R-design suspension?
My Father runs a previous generation D4 SE Lux and I run current generation D4 Cross Country, but drove a few XC40s before deciding on the V60. The main reason I chose the V60 over the XC40 was the reduced legroom. Compared to the V60 the XC40 the first thing I notice is the more responsive steering. The ride isn't quite a good as the V60, but still reasonable unless the surface is consistently rough and it upsets the shorter wheelbase. Another difference is slightly higher level of wind noise. The interior and boot space are good.
As the previous poster noted the sat nav isn't good. In fact apart from the larger screen it's functionality is reduced compared to the previous generation. Which is exaggerated by the touchscreen being harder to use than the old buttons and scroll wheel on the steering wheel.

I've spent several days in the T3 and T4 automatic versions of the XC40.
I'd recommend the T3, particularly on base spec wheels.
The T4 I had was fitted with optional big wheels and Pirelli P-Zero tyres. It was awful in near zero temperatures.
MPG on the T3 was almost 40, on the T4 it was below 30. Driven for a few hundred miles, mostly motorway in each.

We've had our T5 Recharge for 3 months now.
It's a decent car. Averaging something silly like 140mpg (it's a PHEV).
Build quality is very good, ride is very soft (Inscription spec on 19"s).
We added Apple CarPlay, so use Google Maps for navigation. As others have said, the std Sat Nav is rubbish.
Otherwise it's a decent car. Not exciting, but does the job.
