XC90 R-Design Pro
Discussion
Hello, I’m looking at the XC90 as the next family bus, probably new as I’m a bit fussy on spec. T8 is (I think) out of budget so it’ll probably be one of the B5 mild-hybrids (petrol or diesel).
Anyone got any experience here and can recommend one over the other? My initial thought is diesel, it’s a big heavy SUV after all but I haven’t driven the petrol version yet to compare.
Also, I’ve read on here that the earlier D5 engined cars suffered from a sluggish gearbox at times, particularly when rolling to a junction and then wanting to pull out. Does anyone know if the B5 cars suffer from the same problem?
Thanks

I can't comment on driving either the petrol or diesel (I only test drove them so have no real world input), but just note the new Mk 3 was due to be out already, and has been delayed.
They've recently updated Mk 2 T8 with a bigger battery, but don't know if any changes have gone into the rest of the range, or if they'll suddenly release the new one!
Try to find out when the new one is now due, as you could grab yourself a bargain on the Mk 2, or make the leap to the newer version.

From what I understand the XC90 replacement will be announced in 2022 with deliveries starting in 2023 and I can’t wait that long!
Also, it’ll be fully electric only so will command a premium above and beyond what Volvo already charge. Will likely not be called XC90 anymore either to help further distance it from the existing model.

Bit late to the party on this one, and not B5 specific.
I’ve got an XC90 in R-Design Pro spec - 2018and D5.
The hesitancy at junctions was annoying, but definitely improved with the Polestar remap. The gearbox was greatly improved.
I did a thread on this a while back. Recently I did think the hesitancy had returned. The car went in for its annual service just recently and the PowerPulse delivery pipe had failed which reduced the spooling up of the turbo from idle. With this replaced it sharpened things up. Interestingly the fault itself did not bring up an engine management light, but it had a fault code when hooked up on the diagnostics.
Way back I did drive a T6 and didn’t really like the nature of the engine and thought the mpg may well be poor in reality, hence I went for the diesel.
If I ever get another Volvo I’d probably get the Polestar remap as it has turned out to be worthwhile- it wasn’t so apparent at the time, but has made the car feel more alert and pleasurable to drive.
