02 MY XC70 rear clunk, answers needed
Discussion
Recently I semi inherited my late fathers old XC70.
As per title it has a clunk from the centre/rear section when reversing around a bend. Doesn’t always happen but when it does it can be felt through the seat.
I think it might be the viscous coupling to the rear diff. If so, does anyone know of a fix?
I have toyed with the ideal of ripping out the rear diff and axels completely so it’s just fwd. Does anyone have any experience of this?
I don’t really want to get rid of the car partly for sentimental value and party because it’s a rare manual which has 120k on the clock.
It’s an 02 plate WITHOUT the Haldex all wheel drive system.
Any helpful comments would be much appreciated!

Call me crazy but could you not just live with a 'clunk' the odd time you decide to reverse round a corner?
It's an almost 20yr old car, I would call it character but that's because I am tight.
Considering getting rid of it or taking out half of the AWD system for a clunk when you reverse round a corner (sometimes!) seems insane.
Just my 2p worth.

We recently bought a 51 plate V70XC.
Awd is working perfectly at the moment but fully aware of the potential for borkage, my research found that if anything from the angle gear back - prop joints/mounts, viscous coupling etc fails, you can simply remove the prop and run it FWD. No need to mess with the rear axles.
(Think my dad would like to have known that back when he had a P plate V70 AWD - he had two props, one under warranty, and the next second one was failing when he scrapped the car, those ones were not rebuildable, at the time at least)
But as the other poster said, I'd just keep it AWD until it properly failed, which it might not do for the rest of the cars life.
