Morning All, this is the first time i've had to post a possible fault question regarding my Wife's XC60 in the nearly 5yrs she's owned it, so that in itself is testament to how reliable these cars are.

Anyhow, the model is an XC60 D5 AWD Auto & its 5th Birthday is October this year.

Picking my youngest up from School yesterday & when i went out to the car i noticed it was locked (mirrors folded in & all doors other than the drivers door the visible lock stalks were down). Didn't think anything of it so set off for school. Locked the car when i parked the car, but again when i returned the exact same, being mirrors folded in & all lock stalks down other than the drivers.

Had a play around with the various ways to lock the car (remote, keyless button on the door & interior locking switch), but none of these would trigger the drivers door to lock. Then hoped it was just the stalk, so approached the car (locked) without the key so as not to activate Keyless & tried the drivers door which opened & set off the Alarm.

I've checked the Keyless Locking settings & all as they should be, so am looking for advice on what the issue could be before i head off to an Indy to investigate??

Thanks in advance.

I think there's something about the driver's door won't stay locked if something else is amiss. Bootlid or something.

It'll be in tbe handbook.

Checked the Handbook & my good friend Google & have seen mention of the control unit/actuator being a possible cause as they do fail over time, although didn't appear it was a common problem.

Will check all the doors & bootlid again but didn't spot anything yesterday & whilst inside the car, any door/boot being open would display on the dash.

Door locks are a common fault with some Volvos sadly.

My drivers door lock failed locked, so I couldn't even get in!

A new door lock unit is around £400-£500 but if you have a warranty that should cover it.

It's really a safety fault that they should have recalled many cars for, but I believe that their advice is it isn't as you would just break the windows if trapped inside! ... that's why I carry a safety hammer in mine now.

Thanks. Warranty ended at 36mths & car has been rock solid so didn't see a need to extend.

Guess i'll have to book in at a local Volvo Indy & get them to take a look.

As has been said, common issue with Ford era models so V50, P3 V70 and the XC60 but if you're reasonably handy, then plenty Focus / Mondeo out there to donate parts. My last pair of locks for my V70 came from a similar era Mondeo for £10 for the pair from a breaker and about an hour per door to fit, though on the V70 you need to swap one small plastic part as it differs on the Mondeo lock. Not sure where the XC60 steals its parts from but yes, dealer parts are very expensive which hurts given how widespread the issue is.

Update:

It was the door lock unit & got it replaced at a local Volvo Indy with the overall bill being £380, so that wasn't too badsmile
