Hi all

Recently bought a 2008 V70 D5 auto and wanted to say hello!

After looking for a while for a Tdi Golf mk4 - partly for the nostalgia value - and struggling to find a decent one, I went to look at a high miler V70 and loved it.

130k miles, 2 owner and FVSH. I bought privately for £2.5k as it has a couple of issues - hoping I got a reasonable deal!

The steering is heavy at times, the ac doesn’t work and it has an intermittent park sensor system/parking brake fault. Which feels electrical. It had a new park sensor module fitted by Volvo 2 years ago. I guess I’ll get these things fixed in time.

So far I have cleaned it, flushed the PAS system (no difference) and replaced two missing engine cover mounts. I’m fairly handy so plan to service and do minor maintenance myself. Pointers and advice on these cars welcome.

More to come!

Chris

Hi, well a bit of an update and it would be great to get some advice too.

Just passed MOT with no advisories - well pleased with this although not too surprising as all is generally well with the car.

Whilst there I asked the garage to plug in the old code reader to see if we can get to the bottom of the electrical problems.

Well there are many!

Attached pics of the codes - I suspect some of these are old. The main issues I’ve been having are as follows;

-Intermittent Parking brake service required message - results in parking brake not working (won’t release if engaged - I’ve stopped using)
-Intermittent park assist failure. When it is working, the beeps sound a bit stuttery like a bad connection…
-Sometimes the speedo needle jumps about - once accompanied by the DTC light coming on
Rear driver side passenger door won’t lock on remote

All intermittent and about half the times I drive it none of these faults arrive

Any ideas where to start with this?

Thanks! Chris

Hello,

Speedo and DTC could be the beginnings of an ABS / pickup issue - NSF drives the speedo I believe, integrated in to the hub

Door not locking will be the lock / actuators - it'll either be general wear or the motor (basically a Scalextric item!) has stripped the plastic gear but it's all Ford based so a Mondeo will donate a used one and it's an hour to change but you do need to change a couple of bits over from the original Volvo lock assembly but no biggie.

Heavy / intermitant power steering is common and all roads lead to the pump which again is a common Ford part and about £50 to £200 depending on how cheapy branded you go. Mine does the same once in a blue moon but the reasons why it does are a mystery, fluid change achieves nothing. I tried that too.

Parking brake can be anything from the control unit to the calipers to the wiring so you might have to have your man investigate that one further. Some gorillas can be a bit cack handed when pushing the rear pistons in for a pad change which does them no favours and the button s can be tempremental but again, maybe a bit more investigating needed, ditto the DSTC / speedo.

As for codes, Volvo will store codes from the dawn of time - all of mine have been hilariously bad when first checked so sometimes you're best to do a complete clear down, run the car for a few days and then recheck to see what has come back recently though they should also be time and date stamped. There's rumours that excess codes can create issues in itself but I'm not convinced.

Thanks Davie. Really helpful.

Not sure which will be the first to tackle - probably the door lock as I can do this myself! I see there is a good video on YouTube, for the front door at least.

Re the intermittent parking brake / parking sensor fault, I guess it’s worth saying that those two faults always appear together. When parking brake is working, I had a good play around with it the other day and it was applying and disengaging just fine, over and over. Would you say this rules out a calliper and switch issue and narrows it to a control unit?
