Morning,
I need a small estate to replace my XC90. It must be a petrol because of the Bristol CAZ zone and a minimum of a Euro4. I have no intention of spending more then £5K because it will soon be full with Horse stuff.
I’ve found near me for £4K , a 2008 2.0 v50. Are these good value? I know they are old, many Ford parts, probably not economical and not the cheapest to tax. But compared to the xc90 it will be cheaper over all! There doesn’t appear to be many petrol v50 available....
I’ve been put off 318 and 320 touring BMW in the BMW threads and I’ve also been looking at Ford Focus estate. I’m not a badge snob but I’ve had Volvos before and they’ve always been fairly reliable. Any views on the v50 or similar size estates for about £5k? Skoda and Seats also seem to be fairly expensive compared to the volvo
Thank you

I have a V50 estate, a 2012 D2 R-Design, owned since new, its now on 226K miles, and has (touching wood) had very little go wrong.
In terms of serving and parts its cost very little, (DPF and battery at 194K miles, 2 x Rear shock absorbers at 221K, a couple of front arms and steering gaiters, and thats it!)
I like it!! Its never going to set the world on fire, but just goes about its job without causing offence.
For a family car I would say its lacking rear leg room especially if front passengers are above average height.
I have no idea if 4K is a sensible price for what you are looking at (sorry), all I know is that mine is worth buttons!!

Thank you. Looks like over all they do appear to be fairly reliable and good to see another Volvo over 200K. You are correct about the rear space, doesn’t look like there is much leg room but it will be suitable for our requirements. I keep looking at the advertisement and I’m pretty certain that if it drives well I’ll buy it unless I get a few suggestions on other cars to look at. MOT history looks great and I’ll go and see it Tuesday
It's seems dear on paper.
I bought an 07 V50 2.0D Sport about 3yrs / 60k ago and it's been superb since and is the first car in a long time I've had no desire to change as it just works.
Yes it's a PSA / Ford derived engine but it's rather good in a solid little donkey way. Mine is now 230,000 miles and has wanted for nothing in the past 60,000 (hard) miles aside for regular servicing.
Chassis is Ford Focus and despite the Volvo dullards whining about how it's not a real Volvo, it drives a damn sight better than a V70 and is cheap and easy to maintain. Mines had lower arms, rear shock mounts and front wheels bearings but nothing was expensive.
I also had the well documented CEM issues but a thorough clean and light energy paper session on the pubs and touch wood, it's never faulted for the past couple of years. It's a great tool, actually seems to be wearing it's miles better than my old V70's and it's far from pampered.
However, on the price front I've not long bought my sister a 2010 V50 R-Design and again a 2.0D and with 140k, full history and it's a really nice car. I paid ~£2000 for it but maybe Covid has driven the price of cheap, dependable cars up of late and I admit I got a absolute find but even still, £4k seems a bit spendy.
Regardless, I'd recommend them. Plenty online about what to watch for, common issues and such like but there's nothing really that challenging about them... chassis, running gear and engines are all pretty well proven and running costs are pretty reasonable.
I'd have another.

Thank you for the detailed help.

That’s the one I’m talking about. 90k miles. There are others in the 130k to 140k range at around the £2k Mark. I guess it is a lot of money for a 13 year old “boring” car. I’ll go to look at this one and perhaps I may wait for a higher miles cheaper one. It will be used for hobbies only and of full muddy boots and animal feed within 24 hours. Perhaps I don’t need the full leather and low miles one... I’ve got until October
Thank you
