2021 Best tyres for P2 V70

I’ve seen a number of threads on the best tyres for V70s from many years back, but nothing really in the last five years, so I imagine the best tyres for a V70 have now changed...

With that in mind, are there any tyres that Volvo drivers particularly rate that would be well suited to a 2006 V70 2.5T manual in 2021?

I’m after decent comfort and relatively low noise levels, with reasonably precise steering and good dry and wet grip. Current shortlist is:

• Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2
• Michelin Primacy 4
• Michelin Pilot Sport 4
• Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5

Are any of these particularly Volvo-friendly/is there anything better I’m missing?

I use a Hankook Ventus S1 Evo on mine. Tried a few different tyres and always come back to them.
Car is a P3 D5.

Thanks. What is it you like about these? I’ve driven several VW Group cars with Hankooks and never thought much of them. Not sure which exact versions these were, though.

They seem quiet. Last the longest. Have good grip in all weathers to.
Cheaper than the premium makes as well. Tried Uniroyal rainsports and some pirelli in the best. Hankook seemed the best for me.
Do spend a fair bit of driving time on the motorways though.

Are these the S1 Evo, or the more recent S1 Evo 3, do you know? The S1 Evos seem to be about 10 years old now, which is pretty old in tyre terms I think.

Hi, just looked at what's on the car and it's the Evo 2s. They were put on last summer.
They have been around awhile, I like them though.

Always liked the original Pirelli 6000's, but since their demise, tried Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric which I thought were rubbish.
Now shod with Goodyear Gen2 Vector 4 Seasons 225/45/R17V which seem much better.

On balance, I think I’m going to stick with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, which I had on my BMW 130i and found both an enjoyable steer and comfy and quiet enough.

Thought it might be worth going for something more comfort oriented, but never found the PS4s harsh, so am hoping they’ll work equally well on the V70...

Goodyear Eagle Asy3 and Asy5
Avon ZV5
Hankook Evo
Vred Ultrac Satin

The Hankooks were a bit rubbish, bottom of the pile.
The Avon’s were a good tyre but wore very quickly. This was on a D5 so heavy front end but they only lasted about 10k.
I’ve very recently fitted the Vred’s having read very good reviews on them. Bit too early to draw a full conclusion but they are very quiet, compliant, but there’s definitely a slight lack of feel on higher speed B road bends.

I keep going back the the Goodyear’s. Superb tyre. Wet grip is 1st class, turn in is good and they nice and quiet. Bearing in mind they come up a bit cheaper in P2 sizes, my personal experience is they are by far the best tyre for the money. Normally Black Circles do a “Buy two get £xx off” deal too.

Thanks. Ordered Michelin PS4s - £322 for four fitted, which I thought was pretty good value.

I’m still undecided about Goodyear Asymmetric 5s - think I’d prefer the Goodyears on the Volvo and the Michelins on my BMW, but will be the other way around. Ah well...

FWIW, it think the Goodyear’s are a bloody good daily tyre. I have no idea how they fare on a sports car or something with more grunt. By as an everyday tyre for the commute and general duties they’re fantastic, and for that reason they go on my 16 year old 190k V70 and they do everything I want them to.
I’d always thought the PS4 was a bit more focussed than the Goodyear, and as such a bit of waste on a V70. I could be wrong though and I’d be grateful if you would report back what you think.

They are good. Don’t feel as sharp or comfy as the Michelin PS4s I had on my old 130i, but my old one had been properly aligned on the PS4s, whereas my new 130i hasn’t been aligned since ditching the supersized aftermarket wheels that were on it when I bought it for proper BMW alloys and Goodyears...Fingers crossed I’ll be fitting new suspension and getting it re-aligned soon.

Tyrereviews claims that the Goodyears are the more sporty tyre in their own comparison video, but I thought the PS4s felt sharper. Bought the V70 with three ancient Pirelli P7 Blues - one on a slightly distorted rim - and a budget tyre on the rear axle. Hopefully it’ll feel better with a new non-distorted rim and four matching Michelins!

I ordered them from Black Circles. Handily they had an additional discount the day I ordered, so the PS4s were £322 fitted for four in the end. Hopefully having them fitted tomorrow.

Interestingly, the guy at the garage fitting them said that Michelins don’t suit V70s that well, as the compound is too soft for the endless potholes around here. This was in the context of me having to delay fitting, as I’m waiting for a new alloy to arrive, as one of the current ones is slightly distorted.

He recommended Pirellis or Continentals instead. Problem for me is that the Continental Premium Contact 6 is less comfy and noisier than the PS4, which doesn’t sound like a good match with the V70 and I have an aversion to Pirelli as they seem to have 50 types of tyre for each name they use, so god knows which ones are new/old or good/bad...

For what’s it’s worth, I had Conti Premium Contact 6 on an X-Trail. Bloody hated them. Grip was nothing to shout about and certainly not becoming of that price point. They wore quickly, and they were noisy.

The PS4s seem good so far. Hard to compare them with the ancient Pirellis that were on before as they had knackered, cracking rubber and one of the wheels was distorted (I’ve had a new - well it’s used, but undistorted - alloy fitted).

After an alignment they feel reasonably precise, comfy and quiet. Can’t say the car feels particularly sharp or the smoothest ride in the world, but I think that’s down to the suspension trying to deal with some of the destroyed road surfaces around us more than any tyre or suspension issue.

Need to check the tyre pressures since three were fitted by one place and the final wheel/tyre fitted elsewhere. Promising so far, though...

I used to use Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue on my C70 and they lasted FOREVER - 20 - 25k on the front when the Michelins and Goodyear Eagles I used were done in my 15k. Very much a touring tyre rather than a sports tyre but great performance in the wet.

A friend had similar experience on his S80, with excellent wear.

To be fair, black circles want £112 a corner for those, as opposed to £77 for the GY. For another £70 per axle I’d want that extra mileage out of them!
For some reason I’m quite adverse to Pirelli after a bad wet weather experience with some P600s many years ago... I’m sure they’ve come on well since then
