MY2021 XC90 - Critical charging fault
Discussion
I've had my new B5 (mild hybrid) XC90 for 2 weeks and 167miles when it threw up this error message and went into limp mode (~5mph max). After about 30mins it cleared itself & I could drive home. VOC had turned up & I was waiting to be recovered when I tried it again. Anyone else had this issue? Dealer says it's a 'known fault and Volvo are looking into, but don't have a fix'.
The car went to the MD, where they just did a diagnostic download of the errors created when the fault happened. These went to Volvo Sweden where the techie bods removed their rimless glasses and pinched the bridge of their nose. While they did this the car came back to me. Yesterday it went back to the MD where after further discussion with Volvo Sweden it has been decided to replace a battery sensor. Unfortunately this sensor isn't in stock in the UK so the car will go back to the MD the end of next week to be fitted. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. The fault hasn't happened again since Easter Sunday though.
To be fair the MD have been pretty good, so far. They gave me option of their curtesy car for the week so lets hope this resolves the issue.

Not sure I can can help really. I believe the issue is related to the 12v battery falling below a certain level (75%?) which causes the 48v mild hybrid system to register a fault. My car wasn’t being used much (lockdown) so it’s possible my 12v battery was low. Symptoms were the critical fault message and erratic throttle response. I stopped the car and restarted after which it went into limp mode. Volvo assist bloke came to the rescue and fitted this bus bar at the side of the road which he said would prevent this issue in future. Maybe a search of Volvo forums.org.uk will provide more info but, since this fix, I’ve had no reoccurrence.
Thanks - sorted now - the main battery was charged a few times - now when full it has 84% capacity according to my smart meter; fault was still appearing and couldn't start the engine (not cranking at all); had my local Volvo Super Tech with VIDA and he has cleared the faults. now ok with both old batteries.
