I am 90% sure I want a V40 next, likely a T3 (2016 onwards facelift) but contemplating whether to go manual or auto and would welcome thoughts from anyone who has driven either or even better both? If the auto box isn't great in terms of performance or has any known big issues then that would make me think twice.

I've only driven manuals for the last 15 years so it's possible the auto will be a revelation based on everyone who I speak to...most of my driving is in London so lot of stop-start and traffic with occasional longer runs so it seems a no brainer to go auto?
If anyone's has driven the CC variant how did you find it? Not a fan of these tall sub hybrids but I've read that the CC has a less harsher ride than the standard hatch esp the R Design which is apparently quite a firm ride due to suspension and bigger alloys?

Probably need to get out more but I've been looking at the T3 engine specs (150bhp 2016 onwards) for both auto and manual.. same peak torque figure but it comes in much earlier for the manual than auto..1300 rpm Vs 1700rpm..would that make much of a difference in real life driving or not worth even thinking about?

My first auto was a post-16 V40. Loved it. I'd say it was a no-brainer in London.

I think they are very reliable, there seem to be more issues with the manuals from what I remember.

I drive a 2014 D3 auto, but have had a T3 auto loan car.

I believe they are geartronic torque converters in the T3 rather than the problematic powershift gearboxes, so should be fine.

The peak torque on my D3 Polestar is 1750rpm onwards, it just means a smoother initial pull away before the torque comes in. As a result there is less wear and also reduced chance of initial wheelspin.

We have a D3 V40 CC. It is a much nicer (I'm old) ride than the R Design imo. It does have slightly higher profile tyres which helps and supposedly it is 40mm higher than the regular V40, although it doesn't really look it. It is noticeably easier to get into than the R Design C30 we had previously too. Ours is manual, but having driven a few Volvo autos since, the next car will definitely be an auto, probably an XC60.

Thanks for the replies guys..and a happy new year!

Ideally I would of preferred one of the diesel engines for the torque (likely a D3) but doing 4-6k miles per year means I'd rather not risk dpf and/or egr issues etc. The 'war on diesels' would also make me think twice.
I'm still undecided, really like the look of the R design but..small boot, limited rear visibility and the ride comfort on the 17/18 inch alloys is putting doubts in my mind. Just not sure what else will provide similar seats and comfort....whilst not being too big but having a decent boot.

The boot isn't too bad actually, although we did have a C30 before, which needed the seats folding down for the bi-weekly shop. The ride on 17's is pretty good. Ours is the CC, so has the 50 profile tyres, which probably helps. Rear visibility I assumed would be bad, especially as ours has the privacy glass, but with the reversing camera it's perfectly fine.

There are more 'T3' CC's available compared to the standard hatchback within the £12-£13k range..the CC's appear to be less popular but I think the higher ride and use of 17's rather than 18's or 19's could make it better suited to our uneven roads. I will try to take a look at one when the situation permits.

We definately find the CC the better option where we live. We had a C30 R Design before and that was a nice car, but it would bottom out everywhere.
