I'm going to have a look at a 2005 S60 diesel/manual. The owner says that sometimes the ABS sensor light comes on, and that his code reader said it's caused by a faulty left hand side sensor. He also says he has a new sensor, but hasn't had time to fit it, which could well mean the fault is more serious!

I've seen mention of drive shafts and wheel bearings causing ABS faults. Is there an easy way to detect what might be causing the warning light? If not, what's the worse-case scenario, and what would it cost for genuine Volvo parts? Would any garage be able to fit them, or would it need to go to a Volvo workshop (again, I've seen mention of 'special' tools).

Might be the sensor(likely) could be the toothed ring that the sensor takes its reading off,may have corroded enough to split, or as happened in my case the driveshaft retaining bolt could have undone causing the driveshaft to move in and out, any garage can sort the 1st 2 and the bolt can be done by you as can the sensor if you are good with spanners.

Thanks very much. I did have a very brief drive of the car around a carpark, and noticed a very slight clunk coming from the side where the owner said the ABS sensor had failed. I thought it might be a suspension component, but perhaps it could be a loose driveshaft bolt. Anyway, I'm hoping to get a mechanic to check the car over, so he might be able to spot any mechanical problems such as a loose bolt or worn bearing etc.

I suspect that's close to what might be happening, only in this case there's no driveshaft retaining bolt! I had a good mechanic check the car, and he spotted this critical, dangerous problem. It also needs a wheel bearing. I've decided to buy the car, and hopefully addressing these issues will fix the ABS warning.
