Looking for one for Mrs Lawyered. We have one on test drive plus but it's a t4. Budget only really allows t3 but I am worried the lesser engine will ruin it.

She loves the xc40. Theres no realistic way we will be able to try a t3. Does anyone know if there is a significant difference in performance. She doesn't drive quickly but does reasonable miles (we live in the middle of nowhere) so just needs to get about on A and B roads well enough. If it's completely gutless will have to look at upping the budget.

Or any views on the D3?

Any help appreciated

I've driven a t3 and a d3 back to back in a V40.

On paper performance figures for both are similar, but they drive and feel different.

Going from a D3, the T3 feels slower because it doesn't have the same torque. For country road overtaking you'll need much more revs, but it's not strained if you need it.

The other way, the T3 feels smoother and quieter than a D3.

I prefer the D3 for it's low down torque but they're both good engines.

Thanks. I do like the t4, but it's very thirsty and needlessly expensive.

Even the T3 doesn't seem much better mpg. I was mostly worried the little 3 pot would just be a bit crap in a pretty heavy car.

But then I've not been good at getting my head round the trend for smaller engines and adding a turbo so maybe it's just me.

I think the d3 might be worth a try. I doubt shes ever taken her current Leon over 4k so she probably wouldn't even notice

D3 closed for factory ordering a week or so ago.

Where are you based, we're in Worthing (East Sussex) and have a T3 demo.

Im in suffolk, so a bit of a trek but thanks anyway. There is a used t3 at a garage not too far so I might try that, just feel a bit bad when I have no intention of buying it

I’ve got a T4 and it averages around 35mph with mixed driving but mainly shortIsh runs.

Not too fussed about mpg. It is what it is but it did make me chuckle doing the same drives as I do in do in my v8 S5 and only getting 4 or 5 mpg better

I don’t think any of us preferring petrol over diesel care about mpg smile

I've got one and it's totally fine, certainly not "completely gutless" or "a bit crap in a pretty heavy car.".

The turbo is great, it has 163HP and it does 0-60 in 8.8s. There is even a T2 out now with 129HP and I'd compare that to the most widely sold Ford Focus in terms of oomph.

That's reassuring, thanks.
