Hi everyone

In a bit of a panic as I went to start my car today and the revs started hunting and it was generally all over the place and nearly self stalling - basically running like a bag of spanners out of the blue

I’ve just plugged in and received code P0172 - bank 1 too rich

I then tried to start the car without the MAF sensor plugged in and she’s stable again and running smoothly

I've just cleaned the MAF (praying to god it's MAF as cheapest fix) but that's not sorted anything. I guess it could be totally buggered so i'm going to try a replacement MAF.

Could it be anything else if it's literally as soon as you plug the MAF in that the issues start? One would think this pinpoints it quite well?

Thanks

Definitely Sounds like the MAF.
I had similar issues, but without codes, the idle would stumble and the ecu would then crack the throttle a bit to stop it stalling which would spike rpm.. unplugging maf and it was much better.
Cleaning the maf with proper maf cleaner, and also taking the throttle plate off and giving that a good clean worked for me, but im aware there will be a new maf required soon.
(Ps only use Bosch as a replacement as aftermarket parts are more trouble than they are worth)

Thanks for the reply - I’ve just installed a replacement Bosch unit and have the same issue unfortunately - any ideas what else it could be?

Really thought it would be the MAF

Before buying expensive sensors for a car and assuming the worst I will check that my battery is in good condition

Feelin' like a doofus!

Battery had enough juice to start the car but evidently not enough to run the air&fueling system!

Without the MAF connected i understand the ECU defaults to pre-set values hence it would run OK

Wow!
