Hi.

I fancy a XC90 and found a 2007 with 100k on the clock. It's a D5 with Geartronic auto. I have no experience with this box so should I be concerned?

What is the main issues with this car?

Thanks

Simon.

These are excellent cars. I've had mine since new in 2005.

Things to watch out for:
Electrical problems - make sure that everything works, including the radio,CD player.
Leaks into the front footwells
Broken gear in the prop shaft transmission.
Noisy suspension could require new bushes - particularly at this age

Just be aware that Volvo parts prices are cripplingly expensive, so find a good indy rather than using the main stealership. It is a big expensive car. and so it won't be cheap to maintain. But they are very good.

I’ve got a 2007 d5 geartronic. It’s the 185bhp and the £600 a year VED version. We’ve had it for two years. It’s on 165k and we bought it with about 150k. It gets through lots of lightbulbs, be they indicators, main beam, side lights or number plate lights. But they are easy to change.

The fuel cap release broke so you had to release and lock from inside the car by taking some of the panel off. Just replaced the lock this week actually for £25 with one from a s60. The hand brake and it’s workings are a constant on the MOT. Only just meeting minimum requirements. Last MOT they took everything off/apart and scrubbed everything and it’s been ok since. However also that MOT I had a power steering rack/pump issue. Car was off the road for 3 weeks whilst we waited for a servo Bosch steering rack and a pump. Together with a MOT it cost £1950 to fix.

I’ve now got the dreaded anti skid message. I purchased the vida dice Volvo software and it’s pointing to the Haldex system. This is a MOT failure with the Orange warning on the dash. I’ll get it fixed once this lock down is finished and I’ve had the 6 month MOT extended. They are big heavy slow complex cars. Expect some big bills at this end of the market but we love it.

Touch wood we’ve not done anything with the gearbox since we’ve had it and no history of any service on the gearbox. So I believe it’s almost 14 years old on 165k miles with same oil. It pulls and finds gears perfectly.... I’m not touching it!

We use it for towing and I’d get another when this one explodes. Under load we do get a weird vibration from under the car but Volvo main dealer could not find anything wrong with it when they had it for two days (assuming they actually did anything) i just think it’s the engine splash tray vibrating as it’s broken and missing a bolt

I've had the anti-skid warning every couple of years, and it has always been an ABS sensor needing replacing. My failed Haldex clutch didn't throw any fault code.

My fuel filler lock failed too. The parking brake mechanism on mine was replaced after about 5 or 6 years because of corrosion, which is annoying because I never use it.

If I was going to keep the car, I would now have the gearbox oil changed.

Front wishbone bushes cause wallowy breaking especially at speed - useful to have a pair of genuine wishbones to press new bushes into.

High VED on a 2007 car too.

Im also keen to hear about the geartronic as i am on the lookout for a new chariot and see this littered in the cars i am looking at. Taking note of the claimed combined MPG figures it seems to knock about 10 mpg off too

Yes, this is true. Mine is a 2005, so just avoids the big hike in VED rates.

Rear wheel bearings seem to be an issue with higher miles (70k +). The whole hub assembly has to be replaced.

4wd going to 2wd looked to be a pre-facelift issue (2010). No warning codes etc as far as I'm aware.

Turning circle is woeful.

Fuel economy not great.

Auto box is generally OK, but it does feel like the whole thing is programmed to be slow when taking off in auto mode. I suspect to either protect the box or engine. This shows itself most when pulling out of roundabouts/junctions. This can be avoided by using manual mode (or by giving yourself a lot more time when pulling out).

They're great cars though on the whole. We had ours for 6yrs and 100k miles. Took everything a young family could throw at it and more. 7 seats very handy. Tons of room. A real workhorse.

Replaced it with a mk2. A lot better as you'd expect, but commensurately more money.
