Having owned many 740s over the years, I’d go for one of those. The 240s seem to suffer with rot, where as all of the 740s I had never had even an inch of rust. My best one was a 1989 preface lift 89 740GLE estate that I paid £100 for back in 2006. Such a great car and ran it for many many miles. Only breakdowns were a snapped fan belt and a broken ignition module.
Unfortunately prices have gone absolutely insane and you have to pay for a good one now. Personally I don’t think they are worth the £3k plus asking prices people seem to be asking for them. I personally think £1k for a good one is more than enough but it’s hard trying to find a good one.
VOC forums are a great source of information too.
Good luck with the hunt!
