Hi Guys,
I bought my first volvo 3 months ago, it is 21 years old and has been off the road for the past 6 years so it was being sold for spares.
I liked the look of the car and wanted to restore the car so me and the wife could use it at weekends to explore the Scotish countryside.
The main trip will be to drive the North coast 500, this is a 500 hundred mile drive around the top of Scotland taking in the beautifull sceanery as you go.
So far so good, the car is now mot'd and road legal, and as soon as we get the covid 19 all clear I can get her out the garage.
The car doesn't have any history, nothing, it didn't even have it's V5 ( I had to apply for it ).
I looked on the VOSA site but this only covers from 2005 so in the first 6 years of it's life it could have been driven twice around the clock.
In the last 15 years it's only done 11000. miles, the speedo currently reads 31626.
When I changed the fuel filter ( which is mounted under the car by the rear wheel ) it had the factory applied underseal paint on it so I know that it hadn't been changed in 21 years, the cam belt was a genuine volvo part, so they make me believe the mileage might be genuine, however it's an automatic and the rubber on the brake pedal shows signs of wear, my wifes Toyota Yaris is an automatic with 30000. miles on the clock and shows no signs of wear on her brake pedal.
Do any of you know how I could find out what mileage had been done up to the year 2005.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I'd be tempted to call a dealer or Volvo UK, it's likely that for the first few years, whilst in warranty that it will have been serviced at Volvo

Hi Roboticarn,
Thanks for your imput I will give it a try, I have the name of the garage that sold the car from new as their sticker is in the rear window, it's a long shot but worth a try.

Thanks.

hi roboticarm,
I took your advice and Volvo uk do have the records.
They confirmed that the volvo dealers in Hatfield have serviced the car from new for 6 years, and they were able to tell me what the mileage was at each service interval.
I now know that by the time it was 6 years old on their last service it had only done 19912 miles, from then VOSA have the mileage recorded which confirms the 31900 miles to be genuine.

Unfortunatly Volvo wouldn't give me this info in writting, they said this practise stopped 2 years ago for legal reasons.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

What if you called them back and ordered a replacement service book from their parts dept at Hatfield?

Then, if they're feeling helpful, they could pass it to service dept to stamp up before they post it to you.

No laws against them doing that.

Thats another good idea of yours, yesterday I messeged the guy who sold me the C70 and tried to perswade him to look for the service book by offering him £50. for it. I will wait a week to see how it works out, if it doesn't then I will try out your idea.

Thanks again.

The Volvo service program recommends items are replaced on a time basis OR mileage as appropriate. E.g Spark plugs at 72,000 miles or 6 years, Timing belt at 96,000 miles or 8 years. Whether other people bother servicing on a time basis, I know not. wink
