2016 S60 D4 (190) bit clunky gearbox esp 1-2, normal?
Discussion
Quick question...
I just bought an approved used 2016 S60 D4 (190) R-Line from Volvo.
It's a fine car but the clutch is a bit stiff, but not exceptionally so, and also the gearbox seems slightly reluctant to engage 1/2 when cold. Again not excessively so.
I'm on the fence whether to have Volvo have a look at it as I really don't have the time.
I've never had "performance" diesel before so not sure if my expectations are a little high with regards to the gear change, and I would imagine the clutch would be a little stiff if it's uprated.
Any experience of these gearboxes? Are they simply a little clunky?
Cheers.

Manual.
It's bearable. It's perfectly possible it's characteristic of the car but I just have no real frame of reference and don't want to damage anything by running it unsympathetically. I mean throw all the sporty alloys and fancy dashboards you like, it's still a diesel PSA/Ford engine in a saloon. Albeit slightly strung out.
I have to say though, even with stupid bouncy springs, Volvo know how to make a comfy, cheap to run, and fairly good looking bus!

hmmm yeh doesnt sound normal.I had an S40 2.0D previously and the gear shifts where smooth so I would presume yours should be as well.
You checked your fluid levels? maybe a fluid flush will help.
could be caused by clutch drag when the centre plate is a bit sticky on dry splines. What mileage you on and has your clutch been recently changed?

Not touching anything. It’s Volvos problem. This I my first non-fleet car I refuse to take a spanner to. I’ve fixed enough cars!
No idea re: clutch change. Paperwork I have is just servicing.
There seems to be some division of opinion as a very decent engineer mate confirmed a lot of people think the box is similarly “clunky” even in standard form.
It’s absolutely fine when you get going.

Sorry im confused so if you have no intention of fixing it, why not just take it to Volvo then to sort out if its their problem?
But if you do, probably just do a fluid change to see if that helps it. Alot of volvo's with similar issues to you solved them by doing a fluid change.
They shouldnt really be clunky.

I just wanted to know if anyone knew if it's characteristic of the model or not as I've heard mixed things.
I'll struggle for the time to get it into Volvo, and don't want to be liable for a diagnostics bill if it's a "they all do that sir!", sort of scenario!
It's no bother, 800 miles down and it's bearable.
