Question. If the handbrake is inoperative, i.e, parts removed, does it affect normal braking,
Only asking as one rear wheel jammed up, RAC guy removed parts, but said when you brake, the calipers and parking brake bits come into operation, so dangerous to drive.
Thought parking bits only came into use when you put handbrake on.
Strangely enough RAC guy thought handbrake operated the FRONT wheels.

S80 has brake shoes operating inside the drum that form the part of the rear brake disk that attaches to the hub. Its a drum brake in the middle with a brake disc on the perimeter. It sounds like the common problem of brake linings seperating from the handbrake shoes and the AA guy has removed the offending brake shoes.
Unless all handbrake parts have been removed from inside the drum and theres no chance of components getting caught or trapped I wouldnt drive it.

He removed all parts, both half shoes etc. As I said the last RAC guy said it's OK to drive, (when the other one failed), this guy is dubious, then again, he thought the handbrake operated the front wheels.Unless all handbrake parts have been removed from inside the drum and theres no chance of components getting caught or trapped I wouldnt drive it.
The disc braking system is good.
If all the parts inside the drum have been removed, shoes, springs, levers. retaining pins, springs etc so its just an empty drum with the end of the cable only protruding through the backplate then there should be no problem in driving the car.
You won't have a handbrake but the car will be ok to drive.
Sometimes you have to do things that are not optimal; says the man who was today driving through Beaconsfield with a four wheeled trailer with a ton of chemical on it on only three wheels, as one of the original tyre valves decided to blow its top off.
Top marks to the yellow and black facia'd tyre guys just off the high street who not only replaced my valve foc but also treated me to a masterclass in short trailer reversing. Made my day.

Thanks for that, that's what I was told last time, but this time RAC guy seemed dubious.You won't have a handbrake but the car will be ok to drive.
