Starting Problem 1991 440 GLE
Discussion
We have an intermittent starting problem. This useful old car, only 57,200 miles, doesn't want to start. Our local garage has tried to fix it, replaced plugs, distributor and ignition coil to no avail. Given its' age we're reluctant to keep throwing money at the problem but it does all the dirty jobs, might the problem be fuel rather than electrics? Short of scraping it can anyone offer advice?

It's just a normal car, so yes, fuel could be the problem...but would have thought your local garage would know the basics of an internal combustion engine? What happens when you try to start it? Presumably it just spins over and never catches? Does it ever sound like it might start?
