Hi all

Been looking at sub £1k V70s as potential part time vans to help me lug big items around and am now thoroughly confused about the engines and specs available. Looking for some Volvo beard knowledge on the following:

2 that I'm looking at are listed as "XT" spec - what does that denote? Where does it sit compared to S and SE?

They're both the same year (1999) and one is a 2.5 petrol and one is 2.4 petrol - is there a preferred engine from these 2? (my man head says get the bigger one)

A couple of reviews mentioned that they weren't as practical as they appeared from the outside, however every owner post I've seen seems to rave about the load bay size. Anyone know if a mk 1 XC90 would be bigger?

Thanks in advance!

After a fair bit of googling here's what I think I've figured out...

The car came with 2.4 & 2.5 NA engines alongside 2.4T & 2.5T turbo engines, which were low pressure turbos that boosted low down torque and both had around 190 bhp. Then later came the 2.3 T5 engine with a high pressure turbo and 250hp.

The XT designation was a spec level and not related to the turbo 'T' - I was thinking maybe it meant '4WD Turbo'. It was the run out spec in 1999 before the mk2 in 2000 and had a few options as standard (apparently a CD player, leather seats, integrated child boosters and a spoiler amongst some others). The only additional options were silver paint, auto box and passenger airbag.

Of course this may all be bks

The 2.4 and 2.5 of that era are of the exact same capacity (2435cc from memory).

The "2.5" is the older engine which came in 10 valve (140 bhp) and 20 valve (170 bhp) versions. The auto boxes on these are the old 4 speed model.

The "2.4" is the later version and has variable valve timing. They come with the later 5 speed auto box. The 2.4 also comes in either 140 or 170 bhp versions but they are both 20 valve engines. (The 140 can be remapped to 180 bhp if required).

Personally, I prefer the 2.4 (in either power output) as they simply feel more responsive than the 2.5.

However, the 2.4 has the electronic throttle module which can fail. This used to be very expensive but nowadays there are specialists who can fix it permanently for less than £200.

Trim is confusing. Volvos of this period were defined more by option packs than standard trim levels and you're unlikely to find any two the same.

Hence it's difficult to say what equipment a car should have. You just have to check the spec of the individual vehicle you're considering and make sure it has the bits you want.

Thanks a lot for the input - really appreciate it.

I ended up looking on eBay which led me to an 06 D5 SE with 120k miles that was hovering around the £800 mark with 10 mins to go. Was watching it ready to bid but it ended at just over £2k (a fair price).

That led me to a ‘recommended’ XC90 from the same seller which was ending shortly afterwards and I’ve now won for the princely sum of £1600. We’ll see if the seller reneges or not, but it’s a 2005 1 owner, 150k mile D5 SE GT with a pretty remarkable MOT history - only 2 fails, both for bulbs.

What’s the worst that could happen? biglaugh
