2001 Volvo V70 XC: transmission noise

Hi there.
I'm new here.
I'm looking at possibly purchasing a 2001 Volvo V70 XC.
It's good sub 150000 miles on the clock and a long MOT but the seller is selling as spares and repairs as it has developed a nipsey transmission.
He's not sure if it's the gearbox or diff.
Is this a bad idea? It's very affordable and within reason I could pay for the repairs if needed.
If it did need a new gearbox or diff what are we looking at in terms of cost?
I don't want to buy an affordable right off.
I know I'm not giving you much here but I know very little about these kind of things so any info very grate fully received!!
