Hi Guys!

First of all, this is my first post, so I apologise if I inadvertently break any rules, or say anything stupid.

I have a Volvo V50 2.0d 2008. RHD. 160k but well maintained by previous owner (hopefully me too)

I have had it for about 5 months now and for 2 of those months, I had near continuous limp mode, which I eventually solved as being a clogged throttle body (I also had a play with the electrics in the passenger footwell). I noticed sometimes that during limp mode, the car would shudder quite badly under acceleration. Since fixing the limp mode, I have found the shuddering has become a near permanent feature. I can coast or 'cruise' at any speed with no shuddering or cabin vibration, until I accelerate.

I have done quite a lot of online research that hasnt really helped except to potentially narrow the issue down:

I doubt it is a bent drive shaft, as the shuddering is only under acceleration.
I doubt it is a buckled wheel, tyre or wheel balance for the same reason - no shuddering when no load exerted on the engine.
I have my suspicions upon engine mounts, however, most problems concerning engine mounts appear to have produced the worst shudder or vibration whilst at idle. My engine seems fine at idle!

Does anybody have any suggestions? I suspect the car has been remapped by a previous owner, as it is faster than my old Saab 9-3 turbo. Could it be something to do with any extra power? I'm not sure what those drivetrains can take, but lets say its running 180bhp: surely that's an easy enough load? I do have suspicions about the injectors, could they create the effect?

Anyway, what do you all reckon? The Mysterious Case of the Shuddering Volvo?

Thanks for any suggestions in advance!

Hi! Thanks for the response.

I haven't noticed any particularly bad noises coming from the engine bay except when the engine cover was rattling against the ARB (gaffa tape fix). There is also no unusual vibration through the clutch. Of course, it is quite rattly but it is a diesel, and Ive so far put the engine noise down to a potential engine mount. I am going to contact the previous owner and see if he has ever had the DMF changed today though.

Thanks again and will keep you posted - certainly not ruling it out, although I really hope it isnt the DMF!

Hi again guys: update time.

So I forgot to mention that I only get sub 40MPG. Always have done (6 months).

Also, whilst overtaking yesterday a car pulled out on me (as they do...). I was booting it up hill fairly high revs (seems to vibrate less when driven at high revs for overtaking) and had a good old burnt toast clutch smell. There is a good chance that it was the car in front, to be honest, as Ive never observed any clutch slip in the revs or felt anything thats made me think clutch.

I have read on a volvo forum that these engines are best run at minimum 1600rpm.

Not getting much interest here on the matter, Ive noticed!

Its not a common fault, might be time to take it to a garage frown

Hello, did you ever get anywhere with diagnosing/fixing this? My 158k V50 1.6d has something similar. I’ve just had injector seals done to stop a leak. While most of my driving is motorway cruising I’ve noticed a bit of a judder in 4th and 5th. Having spent the weekend in Wales in hilly A and B roads it’s apparent it begins to a lesser extent in 3rd, and it judders horrendously through the whole car in 4th and 5th.

No noticeable lack of power but it seems to be worst between 1,500 and 2,200rpm before tailing off. It’s fine at a cruise but when accelerating up hills etc it’s really bad!
