Afternoon folks, first time post in the volvo section so Hello byebye

Its time for my wife to get a new car. She's currently has a 06 plate polo and now is looking something a bit nicer.

She initially liked the A class merc or BMW X1. We were passing a few local dealers yesterday so decided to pop in and actually look at some cars in the flesh. We looked around the forecourt of MB and BMW not really seeing anything that took her fancy (age v mileage v cost). As we were leaving i suggested looking in Volvo at the V40. They looked nice but i could see she was eying up the second hand Xc60's. I must admit, these had never been on our radar and i think now they are might be a real contender. She does seem to have a liking for the higher up driving position after driving her sister nissan XXXX a year or so ago. They seemed to have good visability all around which is the total opposite of the A class merc.

Anyway, they had some 2017 plate ones i for around £25k but that's too much really for her need and requirements. Looking on the Volvo website there seems to be some nice ones 2012-2014 with about 30k on the clock for £15-£18k.

Some were D5 AWD others were D4's which i'm guessing are FWD.

We don't need the AWD capability (although it would be useful these last few weeks) so edging towards the D4. I believe there was a facelift and spec change in 2014. Is this a significant change/upgrade? Ie, should be looking for the 2014 facelift model?

I've read reviews about the 8 speed auto box (D4?) being a lot nicer than the 6 speed auto (D5?). She has said that she fancies an auto this time.

Is there anything that we should be looking for when spec'ing or viewing apart from the obvious things like sat nav?

Thanks

David

Hello, I have had a few Volvo models over the past 12 (s60,s80 and V60) and always fancied an XC60. I spent a good few weeks looking and a really nice 2103 D4 SE AWD came up at the Poole Volvo dealer with 24k miles which I bought for just over £15k.

Being a 2013 model it has the black panels and bumpers but still looks nice. I have driven about 1500 miles in it so far and absolutely love it. It is really comfortable and not too sluggish for my cruising up and down the motorway. The high up driving position is also a revelation and I reckon once you have spent some time looking down on everybody else for day to day use you cant beat it.

The only downside I have so far found are the turning circle and the way it drinks diesel in a much more enthusiastic way than the C Class Merc I had before.

If you keep to a sensible speed on a motorway cruise it will do 43ish Mpg but can easily go down to late 30s on short journeys or fast motorway. The 2WD manual version would be much more economical I think...overall I am very pleased with it and would recommend one.

There seems to be very little price difference at Volvo dealers between low or medium mileage. I would hang out for one that looks good on value and mileage as there are quite a few about.....I could have easily spent the same on an identical car with 45k miles.

Good luck with finding a nice one.

Thanks for your comments. Sound very promising. Can i ask what engine you have in yours as i can gather the D4's come in two different sizes?

Thanks again

Yes of course...mine is the 5 cylinder D4 2.4. At this age it seems there were two types of D4 Engine....autos were all 5 cylinder(proper D4) and manuals were the four cylinder which I think is smaller but with the same power figure.

You can find the 2013 model year brochure pdf somewhere on the web if you google and it shows all of the specs.

Good luck,

I have the brochure. The difference is that the newer VEA engines were not compatible withnthe 4wd system used at that time but came with the newer 8speed gearbox (which may be the source of incompatability.

So there are 2.0 and 2.4 D4 XC60s depending on whether they are AND or not

OP have you looked at the V40 Cross Country ? Only the T5 is 4WD, but they are a nice halfway house between the V40 and XC60.
