2000 V70 2.5tdi cut out, won't restart
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum but have owned my v70 for 5 years now.
I was slowing down for some lights probably doing 5-10mph. The lights went green, I put it into second and the engine died as I tried to pull away. It would not restart. Engine turns over fine but doesn't fire. I phoned my girlfriend (at 6 am) to tow me home which she did (very kindly)!
In my rage I put it into my local garage for a basic diagnostic but they couldn't find the problem. No fault codes etc. They recommended an auto electrics specialist to delve further into the problem but at unknown cost.
Being a diyer I thought I'd have a look myself before spending any more money.......
I found the tensioner for the fuel pump belt had worked loose so I've reset the fuel pump timing manually and re-tightened the belt but the car still won't start!
There is fuel going to the injectors and my car is not the common rail type so pretty sure injectors haven't got anything to do with this problem.
Any ideas? I 'm thinking about changing crankshaft sensor as a trial and error thing but can't for the life of me find the bloomin' thing! Anyone know where it is?
It's the D5252T Audi engine but nothing on the internet is helping. There are a few location pics but mine isn't there!
Many thanks for your help in advance
Tom.

Bloody hell....this sounds familiar!
We have a 1999 V70 2.5 diesel (215k)
My wife was driving off the drive on Monday, and when she started the car it didn't sound "right" but i put it down to her maybe not letting the glow plug go out before cranking the engine as it was really cold.
She broke down like "OP" did about 100m down the road. The car would turn over but not go properly....anyway being blond she managed to somehow turn around and get it home before it totally died.
"Volvo" assist turned up and the man suggested fuel pump failure, the car was recovered to Snows Volvo in Southampton. They have manged to drain the battery so couldn't look at it yesterday until it had recharged.
This morning they called me about something to do with a ecu not talking to the fuel pump, but the mechanic suggests that he thinks it may be the pulley for the fuel pump is very worn, and as a result shredded the pulley belt.
Volvo have said they will try replacing the pulley wheel and belt first, but as part has to come from Sweden, it is likely to arrive by Friday and we will get an update then
This is the first break down we have had in 18.5 years of ownership......yes things have had to be replaced now and again, so we should not complain.....but, thank god for the "assist" thing Volvo do if you get it serviced by them. We get full European break down cover for a year or until next service (10k for this model) . Brilliant as we have found a service from Volvo is not much more expensive than an indi, and the last one we used tried to rip us off....and we get the free break down cover ( I first phoned up to check as I thought full euro cover for an old car was to good to be true....but it is, as the RAC and AA will not touch a car this old !)
I will update when i get further news, and hope a pulley wheel and belt with a little labour for diagnostics and fitting/testing will solve the problem...so hopefully will not have sell my other kidney.......

Wow! What a coincidence. Hope they get yours fixed. I'm going out there tonight to advance the flywheel another rotation as I think no1 piston may be tdc on the exhaust stroke rather than combustion stroke.
I'll update if she starts after the adjustment.
I love my v70, they're so reliable but guess even the best go wrong sometimes.

Car sorted, they replaced the belt and pulley and tensioner at a cost of £424 !!! all running well now each part was about £40 odd quid the rest was labour and bloody tax.
The mechanic said the belt was shredding in places, and pulley teeth very worn
If it says good for yet another year I will be happy
parts had to come from OVlov land
cheers

Hi all
Thanks for your help with this. I lined the marks on the flywheel and pump up as advised with no luck so disconnected the pump belt with the pump locked in place using the special bolt. I then turned the flywheel another 360 degrees to get to TDC and reconnected the belt to the pump pulley. Released the locking bolt and still wouldn't start but sounded better and more like it wanted to start. I then locked the pump pulley again, disconnected the belt and released the locking bolt slowly & carefully so I could turn the pump pulley 1 tooth anti clockwise. Then retightened the locking bolt, connected belt and loosened locking bolt, putting the shim back. She now starts!
The economy is down a bit to 35mpg from 42 and the eml keeps coming on intermittently but other than that she's just done 500 miles this weekend without breaking down. Just need to get the pump timed properly now.
I believe it needs DICE or VIDA or VOL FOR to do so but I'm not totally sure.
Is anyone about in the south east (preferably as close to Southend as poss) that could help me out please?
I'm looking to sell her soon aswell but wanted to get her working properly before putting her up. If anyone's interested though please get in touch.
Tom
p.s. glad you got your's fixed too watchnut!

VW Transporter T4s run this engine in some applications - I bet there is a wealth of info on the fan sites for timing it upThanks for your help with this.
