2014 V60 or V70 2.0 D4 Geartronic
Discussion
Looking at getting a new, to me car, needs to be an Estate, comfy, economical, Auto and about £12000 ish so I have been thinking of getting a 2014 MY V70 D4 with the later engine. Then I thought of a V60 of similar age, they seem to be similar money. With the V60 being a newer design does it feel a lot more modern? What sort of economy can I expect? 50mpg average ???
Which would you go for, I will be doing about 25,000 miles per annum mainly longer journeys. Looking to run it for 2 - 3 years. or would you suggest something else?
Is the D3 worth considering or is it under powered?
Should I save my money and go for an earlier 5 cylinder car and sacrifice some fuel economy? and pay more road tax

I have a 2012 V60 D5 auto. It'll do mid 40s mpg on a run (sat at 80 ish) mid 30s around town. The D4 will give you better economy.
I sat in a V70 but didn't drive one prior to my V60 purchase, the V70 just felt like an older car.
My V60 has been great, it has plenty of kit, the seats are excellent and even the infotainment works well. Obviously the boot is smaller than the V70 but it's plenty big enough for us (two kids and a dog) and we just use a roof box on the rare occasions when we need more space.
I use a Volvo Indy for servicing, Volvo franchises like to charge for their services..
I think the V60 is underrated to be honest, it's not as dynamic a drive as a 3 series, not as well built as an A4 but it's streets ahead of the rest of its competitors as an all round package.
I wouldn't consider a D3 unless bik is an issue.
Try one, you might just like it...

The V60 does look more modern outside but I prefer the interior of the 70, it's a class up from the 60 and feels it IMO. They're both based on the same platform so similar underneath from a tech perspective.
Try them both and see which you like. Given the number of miles you are doing I'd be tempted by the extra comfort of the 70 over the sharper handling of the smaller car.
Also depends on how much space you need, the boot in the 60 is far from big, Deerfoot, well impressed you manage with two kids, you travel lighter than me!

Thanks for the comments so far.
I have had a short drive of a V60 D4 Auto and liked it. I am borrowing one for the day on Saturday so that I can have a decent drive, see if the family and dog fit in etc.
They seem good value for money atm. Looking at a R-Design Lux Nav with Driver Assistance package, Winter Illumination Package and a Sunroof. Should be available in budget as an ex Volvo Management Car.
The alternative seems to be a Golf GTD DSG Estate but the Volvo gearbox is so much smoother than the DSG in my Skoda in traffic.

Well after much messing around, mainly me not being able to make up my mind I bought a 2013 V70 D5 Geartronic in Saville Grey yeaterday. It was super comfy and has the space I need. I kept wondering in a V60 would be too small.
Managed to find one with Driver Assistance, Winter & Family Packs with a Sunroof and Spare wheel so it has everything I want and the bonus was it is only 16 miles from home
