Which Volvo sub 2k?

Im looking to hand back my lease car in a few months and looking at either a sub £2k Saab or Volvo.

Issue is I do around 500miles and 90% is short runs sub 5 miles. My dad always had Volvo's (245, 740 and 940) and i decided that at 35 years old I wanted one. At the sub 2k price point anything I should avoid or will I just kill an older car just doing short runs?

Have a look at V50s, mine does everything i need it too. I would avoid one with a DPF if considering the diesel variants though.

Look at petrol cars only . You will kill any diesel engine with such short journeys.
V50 , c30 , s40 are all esentially the same car. Just diffrent body styles. Depends on what you want.

S60 2.0t all the way, for 2 k you can get a very very nice example.

How about something a little different from Volvo?

I've always thought a 480ES is a good looking car, not as big as most other Volvos, but when was the last time you saw one?

What would you say the C30 is the sucessor of then?

Hardly any jucier than the 2.0T, So yep, more is better.

Perhaps if one was fortunate enough to have 4wd that might be the case, but my D5 E3 struggles with traction a swift getaway as it is, and the T5 has a reputation for being rather unruly, shall we say.

As the OP's doing short journeys I really don't see the point. Sometimes there's a sweet spot in a range.

The 2.4T I had was easily manageable but not particularly fast, the 2.0t is glacial.

I haven't heard any reports of people struggling with a t5 either, they aren't that powerful, just need decent tyres.

940 or 960.

The 850 onward Volvos were turds in comparison, much less reliable and FWD.

Turds by comparison in the case of reliability but much much better in every other conceivable way.

More comfortable, better to drive, less rattly, more tech etc etc.

I am on my 2nd S60 T5. A handful they are not.....

The V70 I have is like a skeleton having a wk in a biscuit tin. So are two friends 850s. The 940 and 960s I've experienced are serene in comparison.

OP, for sub £2,000 the consensus is that an S60 T5 is the solution for your typically sub 5-mile journeys, and 500 miles pcm.

I don't agree, as you've gathered., buit you'll take a view, I'm sure, particularly when you see what £2K buys in terms of the respective models floated wink

Depends if you value a newer reg over a better engine. I know where my money would go. My 2.4t cost £1200 to buy 5 years ago.

I wasn't talking about savings, real or otherwise, I was talking about fitness for purpose. Fact is that decent T5s seem in rather short supply in the OP's price range at any age - the one on AT is not in great nick (to say the least), whereas OP can take his pick of some very nice 2.0Ts, it seems.

OP - how about a C70 Mk1 in either coupe (rare) or convertible flavour, perhaps?
