S60R head gasket gone. Any ideas?
Discussion
So as per the title it seems like bad stuff has happened with my S60R.
It was losing coolant and giving me the coolant low message. Changed the lower rad hose as thought it was an obvious fix due to having a hole. No such luck, coolant still disappearing and mechanic friend diagnosed head gasket failure but has not done one on ab S60R before.
Having read the forums it seems it may be more likely that actually it has cracked the block.
So anyone got any ideas of cost, availability of possible replacement bottom end or if it can be repaired? What else should be replaced (timing belt, water pump, rear seal, clutch etc?)
What a bugger eh? Big money.

This could very well not be the head gasket but the block cracking.
This is a common occurrence, the more so if you are running aftermarket software for higher engine outputs.

I have seen the name but no contact details and don't fancy a trip to Leicester from nearbWest London. Thanks for the advice guys but I think I will leave it with my friendly mechanic and hope for the best, might look into recon'd blocks if there are any.
Expensive decision potentially. Your choice, why ask for advise if you don't really want it.hashtag said:

Quite. Tim will actually give you advice even if you have no intention of using him. He can be hard to pin down, because he's in demand, but it's worth it. Like I said, it's a 5 hour drive for me and I still think it's worth it.
If it is cracked then a 2.4 bottom end is the way forward. Many, many of them are running this way now. No map alteration or noticeable performance drop.
I did ask for advice but can't find Tims number anywhere.
You have informed me that the 2.4 T5 is a good route to take and that is certainly one option that I will consider. This is advice that I am taking on board.
I would prefer to save the original engine if possible but it doesn't seem anyone knows if this is possible.
The engine hasn't been opened up to inspect yet so I will be looking at options once its open and looking to source a block if required depending on what is available and at what money.
I have another friend that worked at a Volvo specialist and now runs his own outfit that has all the specialist tools that he has offered to loan. The chap I have my car with is certainly not a novice although has not worked on an R before. He managed to build his 550bhp Anglia Ok and is inundated with Astons etc.
