Well I got a new V40 D2 about 3 months ago. After 4000 miles the engine check light came on. So I brought it in and apparently the lambda sensor is clogged and needs cleaning.

Now I know short journeys aren't great for diesels - home to work is 6 miles, but I do get it on the motorway at least twice a week for a 70-100 mile round trip.

Is this my 'fault' for driving style. It was suggested a higher octane diesel may help prevent recurrence. I don't want to be having to bring it back to be 'fixed' every 3 months. I'm also sure it's not going to be a warranty item.

Any thoughts please? I changed from petrol as doing 17k a year was getting pricy. I was planning to sell the fuel guzzling Subaru 330s, but if this is going to keep happening with the Volvo, I may as well run the petrol for work and diesel for longer trips.

Cheers

Ok so the sensor was cleaned and all is good. No quibble about being done under warranty either - nice.

He tells me Volvo had a batch of EGRs that weren't up to scratch. But that only '10%' approximately, of clogged sensors clog again once cleaned. It is happens again, they'll replace the EGR.

Thats the first of me hearing about this issue with a D2 V40 (I lurk the V40 owners club forum). Probably just bad luck to be honest.

I've only done about 6500 miles since February (as my commute shortened dramatically) in mine with no issues. The odd tank of V-Power, the occasional spirited drive and making sure I do a longer journey every so often keeps things in check.

Out of curiosity, if you have an R-Design, are your exhausts smokestacks or have they stayed chrome? V40s with 'clean' exhausts are rare things, even petrols.

Thanks- that's good news. I am pleased mine's sorted, just didn't want to have to 'fix' it every 3 months smile .

Mine is an R - and the exhaust tips still look good. I don't drive it hard though, so rarely WOT - and I do clean the car (incl the tips) once a week. Well it is metallic black and I do live up a dusty roadbiggrin

done 85,000 miles in mine now with no mechanical problems, i wouldnt worry too much and just make sure you give it a bit of a thrashing every now and then.

My old T2 had sooty exhausts but surprisingly the D4 remain spotless even after not been cleaned for ages
