2010 V50 DPF question
Discussion
Good morning Volvoists,
I am going to view a 2010 Volvo V50 this week, and have read up on the different flavours of DPF used on the V50, and the potential issues which come with them. The salesman wasn't able to advise me on whether the car had the DPF requiring the periodic EOLYS top up and ECU reset, or the later "lifetime" unit.
Would anyone be able to advise me from the year alone which would be fitted please? The car is a 2.0 Diesel first registered March 2010
Thank you
Kevin

If push comes to shove ask the garage to put it up on a ramp and check out the exhaust system, a car that needs the eloys fluid changing or topping up will have a tank for fluid storage and the associated pipework running to the exhaust system where the DPF is housed.
I used to mooch around on the VOC forum and the DPF question was a real minefield, what with model years overlapping registration dates and such forth, there is an idea about the VIN number identifying what the car is fitted which is detailed below.

That's very helpful, thank you. I had seen the thing about the VIN indicating which it might be. I'll make sure I go armed with the right questions as I don't fancy a lengthy trip to the main dealers to get the magic liquid topped up every couple of years.
It's costly too, I've heard of people getting to 75,000 miles on the clock and getting a right old invoice come service time! You need to know whether the engine is the 4 cylinder Ford/PSA unit (badged 2.0d) or a Volvo 2.0 5 cylinder (badged D3 or D4 depending on power output). The Volvo engined cars have dual exhausts whereas the PSA has no visible exhaust pipe if there's no badge.
The 4 cylinder has an Eolys tank that required refilling, the Volvo engines do not

Thanks for the replies above.
I believe the car I am looking at has the Ford engine, and is currently on 70K, but has been recently serviced. If it hasn't had the dpf replaced then I'll be seeking a sizeable reduction in price to cover the impending large bill, or walking away. I'm also booked to look at a slightly older petrol model later in the day so I have my bases covered.

Just to report back after the helpful info provided above, I spotted a nice looking one owner 2011 D3 2.0 today, popped along to look at it this evening and did a deal on the spot. It's a rather boring grey colour and needs a good polish and a bit of tlc, but mechanically it's spot on with everything done. Picking it up Saturday

Might not be relevant, but my 2004 2.0D which was also the Ford engine needed the DPF changing at 72k, IIRC the quote for a main dealer service was £1200 I believe the car I am looking at has the Ford engine, and is currently on 70K, but has been recently serviced.
