Can't find a sensible mileage D5 but there is a mint T5 for similar money. It is the 4 wheel drive version with active suspension. So potentially a lot to go wrong. Since it's 07 its a few years younger than my old Audi which has been bullet proof. Auto box the big worry as there 2K to fix if it breaks. And I will be towing with it. So what else to look for with one of these or is it best to avoid? Reliability top of the bill for me. If I can get 30 to the gallon that will do. Havn't seen a D5 anything like as tidy as this. Am I Mad or should I just wait for a tidy D5???? Don't want a money pit. Been there.
There never was a 4wd T5, so it's either an S60 R (300bhp) or the seller is mistaken.
In any case they are reliable but you're dealing with a fairly complex decade old car here and all that implies. I've found that while Volvos will continue trucking on in an environment of total neglect for a surprising amount of time it will eventually all catch up with you!
They are good though, and a clean one is a very nice car. You CAN get 30mpg - 35mpg on a very gentle motorway run but realistically 28mpg average is possible if you drive for economy. Maybe 30mpg in a manual.

30mpg is a pipe dream unless you drive like Victor Meldrew. The engine is essentially sound, if it is AWD then it will be a Haldex system and that needs to have been looked after - especially check for matching tyres all round and uneven wear on them.
Assuming with the active suspension you mean the "four-c" active chassis control? These suspension parts are more expensive but rarely fail - The shocks are electronically controlled - if they are shagged, on average they are 4x more expensive than the standard shocks to replace the only other components are sensors located in various parts of the car, but hey, my Volvo is 17 years old and done 120k and is still on it's original shocks

I looked at one of these as a fun car to replace my M3 when I sold it on and I missed some shove in the back motoring, and these are cheap enough to grab my interest. I spoke to my local Volvo indy and he said they are pretty much M3 running costs in terms of fuel and maintenance with parts being expensive and many owners trying to run them on a shoestring, which with the age of them now is a problem being passed to the new owner. They are great cars but they do need so much more spannering on a regular basis than the diesel.
Got the Diesel. S60 D5. 2004 model. Very clean example that hasn't been used a lot so anticipate some electrical issues until it settles into daily use. Already replace clutch pedal sensor & an abs sensor. It's doing 40 ish mpg on a nightmare commute. Did 50mpg in play mode on the way home. Remarkable. Better than expected. It sounds gorgeous. And certainly isn't slow. Not the best turning circle and a bit of a barge to park. But think it will be an excellent tow car. Going in for a full check over & cam belt etc. Actually was going to buy a Jeep but this was such a good drive & in such good condition I had to go for it.
As said above about there not being a T5 AWD (although there might have been a special order from Volvo Sweden?) but anyway, sounds like a S60R. I have had two of these and they are great cars, very much a sleeper car. 295bhp @5400rpm and 295lbft (400nm) @1900rpm. They are expensive to run - no matter how you drive the car it will drink. I got 24-26mpg daily and on a run from north beds to The Lakes about 29/30 iirc. I did manage to get single digits once, but thats another story. The Angle gear from the gearbox to rear Haldex diff is literally made of chocolate and is the weakest point of the car. The Struts are made in conjunction between Ohlins and Monroe and retail about £500 ea. Finding a good one that has money no object spent at it will be hard to find. I would like another, just not financial sense for me at the mo.

I average about 23mpg around town. On the motorway in cruise control she aint too bad. I've had 400 miles out of a tank but that's driving at 60mph.
There good cars, proper sleeper car. I've surprised a few people, they ain't slow but not the fastest. Heavy car, nearly 1.7 ton.
