One of the electric tailgate struts on our 61 plate XC60 has given up the ghost (drivers side has bent - no idea how).

I have rang Volvo and they have advised that the strut design was changed on more recent vehicles and the type fitted to our car are no longer available as spares.

They have advised that i'll have to replace both side with the new design (at a cost of almost £1000 including parts, software???, labour and VAT).

I could really do without a bill of that magnitude right now. Does anyone know of any decent Volvo breakers or spare part places that would stock such a part? I have seen what looks like this part listed on ebay - but i'd have to import it from the USA.

Did you find a solution to your tailgate problem? We have the same thing on our 61 plate XC60. Tailgate hydraulic strut was noisy for a few months, then completely failed at half mast on Saturday. Did you go with the old hydraulic units or did you try the new electric ones as Volvo suggested?

Hi,

My 2011 XC60 (powered strut) also jammed open after a few months of creaking. It clearly had a bend in it as if an internal component had jammed. I had to temporarily disable it. When home I opened up the unit and found the coils had completely shattered into 20+ pieces. I don't know what they should look like but it certainly looked wrong.

I rang a couple of garages and they said £218+ VAT per strut + reset system for £35.

For me such a key component should not fail in this way for any age of car. Anyone have any internal part drawings / images of what they should look like?

This happened to our 2012 XC60 just after it came out of warranty (isn't that always the case??). The creaking got progressively worse, until one day it failed to close and the ram bent as I tried to close it manually. Luckily it was after I dropped the in-laws at Heathrow......

Anyway, I spoke with Volvo West London who explained to me that it was often the case that the dampers "dried out" and eventually failed. I didn't pursue other avenues, but I got a 45% contribution to the fix from Volvo Cars, so it wasn't as horrific as first quoted, albeit it was still a lot. Now we've replaced the XC60 with a Jeep Grand Cherokee which also has an electric tailgate, so fingers crossed, if that ever breaks, Jeep are as kind on their warranty!

I know this is an old thread, but did anyone manage to convert the power tailgate to a manual one?

I've just hit an issue where the the hydraulic pump fails to start when the boot is unlocked.

My 2010 plate XC60 is booked into the dealership next week for the 99 quid investigation but I've got a feeling in my bones that fixing this problem could cost a sizable fraction of the current value of my car. If it's technically possible to do, I'd rather just remove all the hydraulic paraphernalia and fit two standard gas struts.

Sorry to drag up an old thread……

I am looking to convert my XC60 tailgate to manual as well. Anyone know which struts I need or will I have to replace all the mounting points as well?
