Hi all

I've been looking for a Volvo V50 SE Sport D5 as it suits my needs, small estate, good power and still fun for carrying the bikes.

I found this one

It's not a D5 and it high miles.

Should I wait for a D5 to pop up or is this good? It has everything I want otherwise, heated seats, the performance sound system, SE Sport etc.

What do you think?

Wait for a D5. The Ford/PSA 2.0 is a thoroughly unremarkable engine and they come with a real pain in the arse wet DPF system that needs the EOLYS fluid topping up (and VIDA used to tell the car you've done so) ever 36k and a new DPF ever 75K or so. This will probably be coming up for it's 2nd DPF change about now, and it's quite high mileage so if it's never had the dampers and bushes changed it'll be quite soggy to drive.

The less non Volvo content in your Volvo the better, in terms of reliability and performance. These cars are superb with the D5 and a manual gearbox, even more so with a sneaky remap.

Fantastic, thanks a lot for that, there's one for sale now but it's quite a distant away (110 miles) and it doesn't seem to have some of the options I'd like so I think I'll wait a bit more.

How many miles are these good until? Is there anywhere I can get a full run down of what options are available and typical issues or recommended things to change at set intervals for example?

The D5 engine is good for 250k+ miles, as most engines are these days. When was the last time you heard of a car dying due to age/milrage related engine failure (without corresponding neglect)?

With higher mileage it tends to be the suspension that is worn, the interior will be rattlier, bearings, driveshafts, CV joints, automatic gearboxes, clutches & flywheels and all that lot. These small Ford based Volvos do take the miles fairly well, but not to the same degree as the big ones. For example my C70 needed new dampers after 95k of mostly motorway driving, which would be unimaginable on a P2 V70.

I picked up a 2008 V50 D5 a couple of weeks back with just over 100k on it, the whole car feels great and no rattles. As has been said provided they are maintained then you should have no worries.

I plan to get the cambelt changed soon just for my peace of mind, its due at the next service (108k/10 years).

If it's a manual get an MTE remap to take it to 225bhp. Makes it absolutely superb.

It is a manual - I've been looking at the remap options, it might 'accidentally' get done while the cambelt is being done! wink

It was a night and day transformation on my C70. The general improvements in mid range torque are far more useful than the headline power improvement would suggest.

I have done about 40k miles since the remap, currently at 96,000 odd. At your mileage you may well find it'll expose any wear in the clutch and necessitate a replacement.

Had my v50 D5 remapped p with MTE maps about 30k miles ago. Really improves mid-range , pulls much better in higher gears at motorway speeds.
Had the clutch slipping in 3rd after I gave it full beans away from the lights recently!!!😜

Yeah, mine needed a clutch not long after I had it done...
