XC90 problem - cannot move auto lever into gear
Discussion
2004 54 XC90 T6 auto.
Problem started with not being able to get the key out with the gear lever in park.
Then it progressed to not being able to get the gear lever out of park and into gear, with the engine running and foot on brake.
Volvo dealer being as helpful as usual - ie not at all.
Car is of course 4 wheel drive and locked in park, so a tad tricky to deliver to any repair place or even load on a trailer.
Any thoughts what it might be, and how to at least temporarily bypass it to get it fixed?

What does the button on the shifter feel like? Does it feel broken or different to normal.
The bits inside are plastic and do break meaning when you push the button it doesn't move the rod inside properly.
You might have to pull up the console below the shifter and move the rod manually until you can get a new one.
Another thing to check is your brake lights, do they work when you press the pedal?

Is there not a bit where you can stick a screwdriver down to manually release it ?
Hopefully this helps.

Guys, what a great speedy response. Much appreciated. I only haven't responded sooner because I have been flat out at work all day.
It's my daughter's car, so I don't know how it should feel, but you have given me some very good pointers to look into at the weekend, so thank you all.

If you pull up the surround of the gear lever there is a little solenoid which acts on a small pin which locks the shifter inside the shifter mechanism. If you push this with a screwdriver it will move out of park.
I suspect it is the ignition barrel which is at fault - not unheard of on Volvos of this era.
