XC60 - buyers guide? Any horror stories? Pitfalls?

I'm looking at buying a second hand XC60 Automatic Diesel 2008 and newer.
Is there anything I should watch out for? I believe Volvos generally to be bombproof but we are also considering a Freelander 2 / XC70.
Is the ride quality good? What is it like offroad/ heavy snow? Sound quality? Comfort for long journeys?
Thanks.

This may help but ive just got a 2015 XC60 D4 before Christmas, We went for the D4 front wheel drive as its the new Euro 6 190BHP and the new 8 speed gearbox which can be a bit slow but also its very smooth. We are getting currently 40-43MPG which is mainly motorway but we did get 48MPG going to Edinburgh from Kent over Christmas
My Daughter slept both ways as did my OH so the road noise is minimal and I got our refreshed each end.
Have had our D4 AWD example from new in 2013 - now at around 40,000 miles.
Nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Still drives like it did when new.
Have done two ski trips in it and it's very comfortable for long drives down and sure footed in snow.
Considering a step up to a new XC90 in a few months if the man maths works out but would heartily recommend XC60 as a solid all round family hauler.
