V40 D2 - any horror stories?
Discussion
We had a few in my last job as pool cars, and a few of the company car users had them. I borrowed them in preference to pretty much anything else we had, I found them surprisingly punchy and refined.
There was a chap who, while not a hypermiler, did drive very much for economy and the economy computer in his was always showing high 60s. Whenever I had one I'd average over 50mpg with only a slight modicum of effort. I think we probably had 4 or 5 and a few of them were on 60/70K after 2 years with zero issues.
I believe these are still using the Ford/PSA 1.6D aren't they? If you can I'd suggest trying to get the 2.0 VEA D3/D4 models if you're buying new. I believe all of the turbo oil supply issues and various other problems this engine used to have are now solved though.

The 1.6 can be quite economical driven gently - 30mpg in heavy town traffic, 40mpg in light town traffic and 50mpg in sensible motorway driving.
However, if you're replacing a XC90 then I assume you regularly carry people and stuff. If so, whilst the 1.6 can feel reasonably sprightly and be economical one-up, load it with stuff and people and it can start to feel strained and the economy can drop quite a bit.
Test drive it how you actually reckon you'll be using it most of the time.

I've had a d2 r-design nav since June of this year and across 7,000 miles its averaged out mid 50's mpg. My driving varies from doing quite a lot of short runs from cold to long runs to the other end of the country and back. Pumping the tyres up to the eco setting has helped it quite a bit (although the ride has suffered slightly) and on a couple of times it has recently got into the low 70's on a long motorway run. Whilst its not quick by any stretch, the engine suits the car well.
I had a 2012 focus econetic before the volvo and although they share the same psa diesel engine and many other components the d2 is more refined, particularly in terms of engine and road noise. The focus used to make quite a racket when regenerating its dpf which isnt anywhere nearly as noticeable in the d2 and it is doing better on fuel. Both the focus and the d2 have never used a drop of oil. One quirk they both have is a feint chatter (sounds a bit like a bike freewheeling) in certain gears when the car is coasting and engine isn't under load although I understand they all do that.

If I recall correctly, the current D2 is a Volvo developed unit replacing the Ford/PSA. It was a change that was brought in earlier this year I think it was. There are 2 V40 D2's at home, one is mine (a 2014 R-Design) and the other is my dads (a 2015 R-Design). The differences between the mpg we both get is in part due to our commutes and the types of roads.
I go from Fife to Edinburgh which is a total of 65 miles a day and much heavier/slow moving traffic and I can usually get an indicated 70+ mpg each way taking it easy. The trip computer for total average mpg since I got it is currently sitting at 68.9mpg (over 16,000 miles total) which is an actual 64.3mpg. Only on one occasion I have manage to get up to 88mpg. Typically I get just over 600 miles to a tank.
Dad goes from Fife to Glasgow which is a total of 90 miles a day in usually lighter traffic and often texts me saying he parked up with it saying 88+mpg. He has a slightly different driving style to myself. His trip computer for total average since he got his is about 75ish mpg (over 11,000 miles) which is an actual 70 or so mpg. Typically (and annoyingly) he manages over 700 miles to a tank.
Anything over 70mph on the motorway and it just drops like a stone. I worked in Yorkshire for a while and travelling up and down I would just sit at 72mph on cruise control and get high 60's to low 70's miles per gallon.
Another thing whilst I remember, the electronic throttle can have a little bit of a delay at times and if you are off turbo (kicks in at about 1600rpm) don't expect to go anywhere in a hurry!
We have 2013 V60 D2 - It's a great car. The engine's good for a 1.6 diesel. There's plenty of power and since we bought it 12 months ago, it's averaged over 55 mpg (or 5.1 litres per 100 Km). Bearing in mind that the V40's smaller and lighter, you should expect more economy. Also, you won't have as many hills!

You are quite right, I checked and the current V40 D2 is a 2.0 litre diesel, so they are all VEA engines now it seems. I have the new 2016 D2 2.0L Cross country and it is a very smooth engine.Lovely interior and rather spacious. We have young kids and they fit fine in the back. Only real issue is the small rear window but the V40 does come with reverse sensors. It is very good on mpg. Will have to check mpg but it is very good. Excellent all round car. For families with a baby or toddler, the boot is not large enough for a buggy. So that can be an issue.
