Hey guys. I'm after some advice. I'm going to look at a 58 plate Volvo v50. It's the 1.6s diesel model with 156,000 miles.
Cambelt changed with a full service on 16/5/2014. Is there anything I should look out for? Also has anybody got a rough price? Any help would be great as I have never owned a Volvo before.
Regards
Rob

Ive recently bought the v50 t5. It's a great car but I've had the following in two months.
All carpets out because the sunroof drain tubes blocked. Carpets were damp to the touch but I was told it had just been cleaned!
Heater motor burnt out, should be a £700 job with taking the dash out.
Turbo control valve stopped working, cheap enough fix at £100.
I know the diesel cars can have an issue with the dpf needing replacing but unsure on what engines.
Mine has the 18" alloys which give a very harsh ride.

I went to have a drive in the car today. Looked ok. Felt ok to drive etc. he wants £3000 for it as it was on eBay. But I think it's worth around £2500.
I did a data check on the car and the mileage came back abit weird.
Obviously it could just be a mistake.
Also he took the car as part exchange when he sold his car which I thought was abit odd.
it's had its cambelt changed recently (may) so this model must be the cam belt not the timing chain.
Also does anyone know if this model has a diesel partical filter.

I'm not put off by high mileage in the right car with the right engine, but that little 1.6D has it's work cut out and £2500 - £3000 is too much to treat it as disposable. I reckon you can do a lot better for your money. It's also not an engine known for it's longevity!
Ok thanks that's kind of what I needed to hear. I heard the 1.6d gave great MPG but iv never purchased a car with that many miles on before.
I'll either look for a lower mile version or a simular car with good mpg.
Any other of the Volvo's range give good mpg, which are at this price range?

Anything with a 5 cylinder engine is usually a good bet. THe D5 in the V50 will be barely any worse of fuel in the real world (with a manual box) than the 1.6 and is a tough, reliable and charistmatic engine. I have a C70, which must weigh 200KG more than a V50, with a remap to 225bhp and I average 48mpg and get 60mpg+ if I do a long motorway journey at 60MPH.I heard the 1.6d gave great MPG but iv never purchased a car with that many miles on before.

S60 and V70 are worth a look too. S60s are cheap and the V70 is a much nicer car to drive than the V50 if you aren't bothered by the size.
