For shed money, you'll probably get a shed tbh. Try to avoid anything prior to 2004 as they had a few gremlins.Have you considered ex-police?

You'll struggle to get a good T5 at that price, Ex plod T5 2004 onwards are still going for 1900+ and they're not very well specced or in the best condition.Earlier models (2000-2003) can be had for the kind of money you're looking at but they can quickly become a money pit. Avoid pre-2005 auto and semi-auto like the plague, make sure the engine idles smoothly and isn't jerky around town as this will be a knackered throttle body (£££) and pay close attention to the speedo cluster as any weirdness in that department is an expensive problem waiting to happen.
Cars after 2004 don't tend to suffer with any of these problems and have a nicer interior/exterior style. Expect to pay £2500-£3000 for a good high-miler.

The early ones were quite troublesome. By the time anybody realised they need maintaining (volvo say it's a sealed unit and never needs the fluid changing), it was too late.If you're lucky enough to find a low miler and get the fluid flushed straight away, you'll be in with a chance but how often do you see a 11 year old P2 with less than 60k on it?

As to the OP: for the P2 vehicles they underwent a few tweaks during 2003 so the sweet spot is around 2004 onward. If you're looking at diesels (I know the OP specifically is looking at the T5, but other people might read this), the 2004-2005 diesels with a black engine cover are Euro 3 models, therefore do not have a DPF fitted.
To the OP: What about a 2.4 petrol instead of the T5? Perhaps those are the sweet spot you seek - they're not "special" like the T5, therefore may have depreciated more. While it's not going to be obscenely quick it will still be fairly pokey I'd hope?
Oh and the older cars (which do not have chrome surrounds to the dials) are vulnerable to the DIM failing (Driver information module). This manifests as a dashboard which is covered in random warning lights and dials which display nonsense.
This is a few hundred quid to repair; as Martin said earlier the 2004 and onward cars have a fixed version of the DIM - this can be spotted because the dials have chrome rings around them.

There's repair services about that repair DIMs for a fraction of the cost though.
I shall be selling my immaculate late 2005 V70 2.4D soon, because I've just ordered a brand new one. Used mainly to commute between Berkshire and our place in Cumbria so 135,000 miles but spotless. Total service history from a Volvo specialist. Ex-demo then just me from 3,000 miles. But not shed money. pM me if it might be what you're looking for....
I've just recently sold my 150k 2001 "winter smoker that refused to go away" T5 Geartronic that I bought last October for buttons having listened to all the doomster telling me it'd be the most unreliable thing on earth and 10 months / 15,000 miles (and a bucket load of fuel) later... it was still plodding away. My maintenance regime was sparse - never did the box oil, generally drove it with little sympathy and it didn't actually go wrong or fail me. Sold it recently for just under £1,000 which I do still regret.
It's like any second hand car - they all have their inherant issues however a lot of the time it's down to luck and I guess I may have been lucky with mine.
Great cars though, feel absolutely bullet proof and planted.

I bought manual V70 SE D5 8 years ago as tow car and it has been 100% reliable.
Only maintenance is myself changing oil and filters annually and has only needed tyres, pads and some droplinks in 8 years. Now on 155k miles and do under 9k miles per year.
Considering replacing with newer 2006ish model as it it such a great, practical, fit anything in it, family workhorse.
Edited to say, clock does randomly go mental from time to time, but no other electrical issues.
