I want to buy an 850/S70 saloon and I plan on doing some modification to it over time.

If I’m planning on modifying and getting it up to circa 300bhp would I be better off just trying to get an R version and work from there or look for a 2.4 turbo and modify that with bigger turbo etc with supporting modifications?

Standard T5 will easily achieve this figure without the larger turbo but other mods. Larger Turbos are quite easy to come by anyway - standard T5 much cheaper to buy - Most R's are either over priced or completely shagged nowadays - nice to see someone wanting a saloon for a change - I love the saloons - The C70 T5 GT is a nice cheap car to start with and already has 240bhp as standard
With all models I'd recommend a manual - if you go auto on an 850 or S70 make sure you run it in sport mode for all driving conditions (except snow) on the gearbox as this ups the pump pressure and makes changes more positive with less slip - essential on a tuned car - C70s don't have switchable settings and require a software update on the gearbox ECU to achieve the same effect (again, easily done)
