So I bought a C70 T5 on a 2001 X, which is the year for problems apparently!
Basically, won't idle, just cuts out, but if I get it to rev it misfires and hesitates then cuts out again. Sometimes revs up and down
So, ETM I think (Electronic Throttle Motor), common on this model year
However, if I disconnect the MAF, it'll start and run, albeit abit spluttery and it stinks understandably, but it runs. On idle, the revs will still bounce a little, but it doesn't stall. Reconnect the MAF, back to no idle, cuts out etc
I got a second hand MAF to try, still the same - bought it from a Volvo breakers who said the car they removed it from was ok, but who knows
Now, I get get a brand new apparently genuine Volvo part for £55, this is just eh sensor, no trunking etc which I don't need anyway as the full job lot is Volvo only at £300! To get my ETM reconditioned is £125, plus the ballacbe of removing it
Does this sound like a MAF issue, and I just presume the 2nd hand part was as faulty as mine? Or do I now move onto the ETM and save the money? I cleared the DTCs, and it doesn't run long enough to put new codes in, obv puts MAF codes in when the MAF is removed
Help?!

Well the service is easy to knock off. I've just read your post on one of the Volvo forums and agree that you need the codes read. It could be a number of things. My ETM problem, believe it or not, was caused by a sticking rear caliper when running on cruise which confused the system and brought on the light and surging problems. Changed the caliper and it sorted itself out.
You need to find out what type of throttle body it is running - if it is a marelli unit then it may be trouble. The Bosch units are fine - It could just require a good clean out - They never get done because they are so tricky to remove. The Bosch Airflow meters are available as a non-volvo Bosch part for around 180quid if you shop around - Have you got a code reader?

On a MY 2001, it'll be a marelli unit Oddly, it's less common for the marelli to fail on a P1 S/C/V 70 than it is on the P2. Not sure why.
