Hello again.
I've been moving along possibly in finding the fault with my car (850 T5) after a suggestion from another forum member here.

Has anyone actually been able to use a bluetooth bit of kit with an app (Torque App?) and actually find the code/fault and fix it? By fix it I mean identify it is for example an 02 sensor, you have replaced it, then turned off the Engine Check Light with app/kit and lived happily for a few hours.

Any suggestions of which bit of kit would be helpful.

Car has obd2 16 pin socket near ashtray.

I'm not keen on going to a local garage and be charged £40.00-£60.00 each time (as several said on Friday) when I can buy some kit and use it again, and actually learn something too.

Any experiences good or bad welcome. Thank you folks.

Ello again smile

I'm gonna ask this question for you on another forum and see what response I get .

I only really know about the later ME7 cars and I've had a lot of success with Torque and a cheap OBD bluetooth adapter.

I'll get back to you shortly, if nobody else comes up with an answer in the meantime.

Hi that would be grand. Thanks as always.

Fixed exhaust leak and that is one problem eliminated I hope.
Connected battery again and light on, though car disconnected from battery for about 20 hours.

Inspected the car again, taking photos of exhaust system, and unless I am really stupid (high chance) then there is no 02 sensor between cat and back box.
There is one on down pipe and I sprayed this with wd40 yesterday and found electrical connection in engine bay.

I felt with my hands along entire pipe and definitely no second 02 sensor…
There is a plate that you take off that protects/obscures where it should be, but running hands along shows one not fitted, just a smooth pipe, then a join, then back box.

What is going on? This does not make any sense to me and appears to be the original Volvo exhaust, with chrome tip and 'Volvo' stamped on it.

I'm baffled, no pun intended.

Maybe I should unplug front 02 sensor and see if any change or what happens? Car is not running lean/rich either but as I say light is on.
Might be best to take it to a kwik fit type place and get a second opinion/someone else to confirm lack of second 02 sensor.

Unplugged front (and only it appears) 02 sensor. Car appears to smell rich again. Plugged back in and back to normal. Runs fine.
This therefore makes me conclude it is one or several of the following;

1-Front 02 sensor works/fails intermittently.
2-Wiring to front 02 sensor works/fails intermittently.
3-Check Engine light needs resetting manually if car running fine (as appears today).
4-There is another fault being picked up I've not found.
5-02 sensor is kaput enough even when seeming to work that CELight is registering this still.

Cheers as always.
Obviously some code reading needs doing to confirm but looking into that via here.

I'd say 99.9% it's the lambda mate.

The CEL often takes up to 50 miles to clear after a working lambda is fitted.

Oh, and the answer I got regarding readers lead me to believe that some will work some won't.

Not much help I know.

No I've been looking again myself and it does seem hit or miss.
Here is my exhaust looking from the join prior to back box. The protective bracket is what is underneath. I am looking from the back to the front of the car.
As you can see, no second lamba sensor…

Is this normal? Am I mad? At least if it is the one then that eliminates things…
I'll have to pay out as I couldn't physically undo it myself yesterday, and let someone else take the skin off their knuckles!
Thanks for all help as ever.

Again, the early stuff isn't my thing but I believe it's the ME& cars that have the 2 sensors as they monitor the performance of the cat.

You might want to join one of the dedicated forums - VPCUK, T5D5, Volvotuning, Volvoforums (VOC) as there's a wealth of knowledge on those, I can't help thinking that you're missing out when it's just me that replies to your posts lol. There's even a good chance that someone near you has a suitable reader and will be willing to have a look at the car for you.

Hi Martin thanks for all your help and again I am inclined to agree.
Did have a look earlier and found more info consistent with what you said.

I think even if I can't fix it myself then I've tried and that is all I (we) can do.

Take care and I'll post on here as/when have a proper solution.

Looking forward to your findings smile

I'd still recommend looking at one (or all) of the dedicated forums, PH is somewhat lacking when it comes to Volvos but the dedicated ones would most likely give you an answer straight away.

I'm a member of them all but spend most of my time on vpcuk.org, give them a go mate.

RESULT!
Check Engine Light went out today, approx' 100 miles after exhaust repair.
I did read (here I believe-thanks again) that even if I had a new 02 sensor fitted, it can take a while for The Light to go out.

Figured I'd run the car as normal, as see if it went out, fully expecting it not to, and would then have to have new sensor.

So I can report that there was a hole in the top of exhaust, where it joins back box, and this was enough to trigger the 02 sensor in the down pipe before the CAT.
As stated previously, my car has just the single 02 sensor.

At the end of day, the car was saying something was not right, so did its job.
I did take it to my semi regular garage, and they fixed the exhaust, but looking at their work they repaired it in one place, and missed the top hole, which is one of those things.

Hope this helps other people in the future. I bought the exhaust repair stuff from a builders merchant. It is the stuff you'd use around a fire (heat resistant) and cost £2.85 for a tube of it that you apply with a silicone gun.

Much cheaper than new exhaust, code reading, 02 sensor and fitting, which I think would have cost me £400-£500.

Thanks to Martin for his help, as that made me able to eliminate things one by one.
