Hi Guys,

I'm currently looking to buy a V50 and have seen a number of nice R Design models that are on 57/58 plates with about 100 - 120k miles.

Nearly all seem to be diesels and predominantly the 2.0D.

My preference would probably be a 2.4D, however, I'm struggling to find any real world experience on the two engines and their reliability (or lack of).

If anyone could give me any advice on these models who's covered similar mileage it would be appreciated, as I've never really bought a high mileage car or a diesel model, as my mileage doesn't really warrant it. I'm aware that both will probably need a DPF service/replacement at some point.

Any general advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
I have owned a D5 manual all be it in SE Lux spec for 2 1/2 years. It had 82k on the clock when I got it and now is showing 113k . Other than a cambelt and annual servicing it has needed nothing in the way of parts. It does seem to like front tyres, I use Kumho ecstas and they last around 14000. I travel 18 miles a day to and from work, all B roads cross country and I have averaged 46mpg over 30000 miles. On a motorway run, cruise set at 70 it returns just over 50mpg. I chose the D5 specifically as it is a well proven, reliable lump which in my opinion is better than the ford sourced 2.0

The 2.4d is a Volvo designed and developed unit and generally very reliable if looked after. The 2.0 is a development of a PSA DW based diesel unit and is commonly used in Volvos, peugeot, fords, citroens and mazdas and developed jointly with PSA and Ford. Not a bad unit but from experience not as solid the volvo designed 5 cylinder. The 2.2 versions have been known to eat fuel injectors.

Like with all modern diesels, they rely heavily on good maintenance, good quality oil and good quality fuel. Most modern diesels ironically don't like being driven in a miserly like fashion or short journeys too so be careful to choose the right engine for the type of driving you do.
