On the lookout for a 4 wheel drive volvo to see me through the winter, but also as an everyday car for the future, currently have the v50 T5, and I can see that being real fun when we finally get some white stuff, ( we live in a remote area quite high up, so difficult road conditions ).
Which one to look for, heard horror stories about g/boxes on some models, which ones should I avoid.
I suppose budget comes into it, depends if the t5 goes in against it, or I sell it afterwards to recoup some funds.
Let's say between 5-10K, I know that's quite a gap, but it depends if it's a trade in or private buy as to what I'd have to pay.
Thanx.

Have you thought about simply getting a spare set of wheels shod with good winter tyres?

A friend of mine who now lives in the Highlands does this and says that it makes his RWD Mercedes as sure footed as some local 4x4s fitted with their normal all year round tyres.

Have thought about this, I even posted about it, but I get bored with the same car very quickly and this would give me an excuse to try something different.

XC70 or XC90 would be the way to go. Early (pre 2005) models were the troublesome ones. Have a look at the history if you can and make sure there's evidence of transmission services as the auto box can get a bit edgy at around 90k.

Alternatively, if you want to have some fun in the summer, with the same car, there's the V70R/S60R. They have the same AWD system (pretty much) but there's a lot of power to play with too wink

Do they have the same gearbox issues as the XC variant?

The R models come with manual or auto. Personally, I'd go for a manual as the auto box is the same throughout the range I believe. All the AWD models have the same transmission systems which is known to have a dodgy angle gear in the early models.
The R models have a clever suspension/traction system (really expensive shocks with the magnetic oil)that can be switched between modes called 4-C.
