I have a '98 V70, for the past week the CD player has been playing up. I insert a CD it recognizes it, it comes up with track 01 on the display then promptly spits it out. I've tried various CDs old and new so that isn't the problem. The radio still works fine and I assume the tape player does (don't have a tape to hand to test) so I assume it's something localized just to the CD player. Anyone else had this? Is it an easy fix or will it be replacement time?

TIA
George

First thing I'd do is grab a cheap CD lens cleaner, the one with the fluid you dab on the brushes on the disk, and run it several times. Remember - it's a 14 year old player so it'll probably have a buildup of crud on the lens. Especially if anybody has smoked in the vehicle.

If this doesn't work, you've only lost a couple of quid but if it reads the disk at all, that usually means it works and just needs a clean.

They are pretty well known for being crap to be honest - mine does a similar thing on certain CD's (I have the 3 disc in dash changer)and I know of many others that are fickle too - they certainly won't play MP3 or ahem... "legitimate back up copies" of CD's I own - best bet is to buy an Ipod kit and run it through the multi-changer pre-out on the back and bin off the CDs

What's this iPod kit? I have a C70 with the three CD changer which is very fickle. I use a tape converter thing hooked up to an iPod which isn't the best.

I stripped down two SC-900's to clean the laser and have a poke about at possible tuning posts etc.Got one to work really well again, the other still won't play CD's.

Piss to fit if you happy to take apart a few bits of your interior and plugs into where the 6 disc changer goes on the back of the unit - you then just select the "CD6" button and it will play through the car system -
in my C70 I channeled the connecting plug into the center arm rest, I can then plug in the ipod or iphone and leave it in there out of the way - Just one thing to note - mine annoyingly won't charge an Iphone and will bring up an error message saying "charging not supported with this accessory" (newer versions may be different)

Also this one was found with a 30second google search they may be cheaper elsewhere so have a hunt about for the best price.

"edit" - Forgot to mention, this device still allows the 3Cd or single CD system to work too so you can still use both - oh and the awesome tape deck will still function too - if 1980's style "tape hiss" is your thing!

Got it working again, took about half an hour for the cleaner CD to stay in but then it was fine. It's worked all day today so hopefully it was just a case on needing a clean. Not really fussed about MP3 compatibility, speakers are pretty good in my car and CD quality is much better than MP3. Interesting to see how it can be done though.

That's fantastic! Have a virtual pint from me. I had no idea something like this existed so for the past two years 80's tape hiss has been my thing. frown

I've had a fair bit of the lower dash out before when I changed the heater matrix so no bother there.

I'll have a look round ebay and the web and get one. I'll post back when I do.

Thanks again and sorry for the thread hijack. Glad you got yours working OP!

Other options are Grom and Yatour interfaces for the SC head units.
In the Home Cinema & Hi-Fi forum I have a review about the Grom kit.

Good writeup! I'm going to order a Yatour because I don't want/need the Bluetooth from the Grom or the 30 pin iPod connector from the first linked one. Plus it's also the cheapest. smile

Thanks!

Very interesting topic.
I have the same problem in my 850. Decent stereo system too.

Worse with 'modern' cd's but plays older ones for some reason.
But lucky if it plays anything when car is cold.

I'll try a clean and the other solution is interesting too.
Nice one.

I looked at buying a cd cleaning kit from a supermarket but it was £10.00.
So I made my own, with mixed results, on exactly the same principle.

However, it was easier to remove the stereo from car via two lugs that push in/pull out, then unscrew two screws from top of unit.
If you look at an angle you can see the lens of the laser.

This I cleaned with a couple of cotton buds.

Now plays MP3 cd's of music I've put on cd, as well as any cd I put in.

Just make sure you have the code for the stereo before you unplug! Or it won't work when you plug it in again.
