So my step dad, who's got a couple of cracking cars of his own, is selling my Mum's V70 R. He bought it, but she's only ever driven it...very conservatively....and it's been maintained with Volvo, no expense spared. It's immaculate. But it's on a 2003 plate with 140k on it. He wants £4000 for it...which is what he's be offered part ex. I'm very tempted....but am I buying a whole heap of trouble, or something that that could be a whole heap of fun?! Any advice welcome...I'm new to the site.

If it's been well maintained then it'll see you well but you MUST keep up the level of care that it's used to. Remember, it's a 270-290 bhp car (ignore the book figures, they're not 300bhp) so expect the running costs that come with a car that fast. the AWD system can cost a bomb if it breaks (£1500 for the angle gear) the Four-C shocks cost 150-300 quid EACH. Other than that, they suffer very little in the way of failures, my 2003 V70 T5 (ex-police) has done 204500 miles now and after some work, drives perfectly and never lets me down.

Basically, providing you're prepared to pay the rather expensive running costs, £4k is a good price for a car that'll take on most other cars on the road and win - while carrying an Ikea bedroom in the boot biggrin
